E92 M3 Transmission whine

Hi all,

Under acceleration i can hear what can best describe as 'transmission whine', it's quite distracting and am worried it's a fault diff or gearbox. It increases in amplitude the higher the rev range in each gear.

Also i have noticed there is a 'clunk' through the chassis when changing gear sometimes...

I have a 27k miles manual E92 M3.

I have tried to search for this but cannot find anything yet.

Many thanks

The geartrain on the M is very loud (at least on 6MT). Hope into a C63 AMG and you don't hear it. Maybe teh DCT doesn't have it? As for a whine, if it sounds like an older car whining than that is not normal. I have a slight hum but it doesn't really increase or decrease, just mechanical noise and I am 100% sure that it isn't a problem. I drive a 6MT. I am not sure about the clunk.

Ok thanks, it's quite annoying though, makes it sound almost like electric car on gentle revs.

What about the 'clunk' felt through the chassis in some gear changes...is this normal too?

Interesting threads, now i've read those i think i have heard the odd metallic clank, if my diff is out of alignment that whining noise would seem worse, well it's in for an independant check at the weekend, thanks for the info !

Having the same issue since 4000km~
And NO its not normal of its the DCT!!
And like OP has described it increases the higher the revv!
On Auto Trannys, the torque converter always cause this noise to happen.. But am pretty sure there is no torque converter on DCT!!

Appreciate the inputs as am sure its not the diff in my case.

Car has done 114000km~

No whine on mine. Clunk sound is normal for DCT.

Recently our 7 series exhibit a whining sound as the revs builds up and thought it could be the gearbox.

Tried stopping the car. Shift into Neutral and revved the engine and the whine was there. Definitely not transmission.

Dealership confirms that it is the powersteering pump.

Give it a try and see if the whine still exist.

There's been very light whining noise for a while now (Almost like dry belt noise or transmission reverse gear). I can hear it mostly on first gear and low RPMs. Taking it into the dealership this Friday, we'll see if they can diagnose it properly.

My '11 E92 (DCT) started this today at lunch. Didn't notice it until I pulled into the parking garage at work and was going up the ramp in 1st, shifted to 2nd and still there and varied depending on the rpm. Pulled into my parking spot, put it in N and reved it a little and no whine was heard. I'm at 38k so still under warranty. Gonna call the stealership.

UPDATE

They're replacing my entire exhaust. Not sure how this is the source of the whine I am hearing but it's at no cost to me so we'll see.

Turns out the final drive on the diff was knackered, the sound got worse before BMW finally gave in, sounded like a bag of forks in a metal tin...! but all sorted on warrenty..

Still slight whine though, but after many Youtube vids it seems this is the norm

Mine whines a bit on the rundown. I think it's coming from the diff. I believe it is normal.

I get a clunk shifting from 2nd to 1st if the car is still rolling also. It's annoying but doesn't seem to hurt anything.

My 08 DCT has had a transmission whine since the very first drive. It's not too loud, louder than many transmissions. It has never become more intense. I've also swapped my DCT fluid and it's always been there.

my car started doing this around a year ago did take it in but my service adviser at the time was convinced it was a wiring issue, it was very clear this was a mechanical wine but he wouldn't listen. after a while the sounds became louder a deep whine and another very high pitched one, took the car back in again and they are pretty sure it was my transmission. Apparently my transmission seals failed and it started leaking by the time i took it in it only had 0.5L of oil in it. I can swear it sounded like my differential was going out but according to the tech that low deep whine is normal aging of the transmission. i did tell them to double check my diff just to make sure that its ok before i place my order they did check and said its definitely my transmission i really hope they are right i don't want to have to place another order and have to wait twice
