The turbocharger is often described as a device that creates free horsepower because it is driven by spent exhaust gases. In the BMW 1-Series, this exhaust gas is being restricted by the current factory downpipes which slow down the speed of the factory turbochargers to maintain or reach the optimum peak. The Active Autowerke N54 downpipes were created from inception as test pipes that would substitute the factory exhaust catalyst to relieve this back pressure for maximum flow and power gain. These downpipes are created with the least amount of restriction possible by utilizing 3.00" piping - compared to the OEM 2.50" piping - with the least amount of bends possible. What you will experience is a faster, more responsive engine because the turbo impeller now has the ability to spool very quickly. For added durability, factory like support braces are also implemented to alleviate the stresses upon the turbochargers. Creating these pipes from T304 stainless steel throughout ensures robust and durable pieces that will provide trouble-free performance with the longevity to match.
