Brake Sensor, why so much pad left?

Replacing pads (with low dust hawks)on my 128i and busted off the brake sensor, it looks like the sensors activate with a HUGE amount of pad left?? What gives?

I'd just assume bypass the dam things, what is the recommended procedure? Or should I just get a new one....

Get a new one. IMO
There should be some pad left to avoid overheating brake pad.

I ended up getting a new one. I'm still curious why the sensor kicks in with literally 50% of the pad left?

BMW sensors are designed to give you a dash warning when the pad material is down to 3mm ( most new pads are 10 or 11mm ) . It is set at 3mm so the driver is not scared into thinking that they have "no brakes" when actually they have plenty of pad life left to make a regular scheduled appt at the dealer. commonly 1000 miles is no problem when at 3mm. This helps reduce the burden on the dealers service schedueling.

Regards.
