Tee Mod
I know that much has been written, which I have read, about the Tee Mod. Some say a little gas mileage is lost. There has not been any real proof of this but I would like to ask a question? I was always under the impression that allowing the exhaust to get out faster and more, say two tail pipes instead of one, was a good thing. It allowed the motor to breath and run better. If this is true then would it not be better to have the "Tee" mod incorporated? Or is it that the Turbo needs the exhaust, one tail pipe at certain RPM's and two tail pipes at other RPM's? I like the sound but do not want to do any damage to the motor. I know some have had the mod on for a long time and do not report any problems. Any comments are welcome.

The turbo doesn't really need the exhaust. If you do the tee mod, you won't notice any difference in power (positive or negative) and it won't hurt your motor.

the closing flap is solely for quieting it down for the average buyer, to keep it quiet and pleasant. In theory a turbo'd motor needs zero back pressure, so a completely restriction free exhaust would be ideal, but i doubt that the flap really makes a difference in regards to power.
When i did it i noticed zero mileage difference. I think people that have said that only had a difference in mileage because they were driving harder due to the exhaust note being more enjoyable and louder, as well as being able to hear the difference. Much like when someone buys an aftermarket exhaust and spends the next week romping around because it is eargasmic.

I've been running the stock exhaust with the golf-tee mod done since August. Absolutely no change in gas mileage whatsoever compared to before once I got over the new awesome sound at low rpms.
Ignoring the fact that a FI car is helped by free-flowing exhaust, I doubt the mod effects back-pressure in any significant way anyways.

the difference in mileage is from driving differently to hear the exhaust more.
the flap won't unlock any power. it's just a little flap. you probably won't see much of a difference until you're pushing the turbo and running a 3.5" system. I haven't seen a 3.5" system that wasn't insanely loud. do it, enjoy it, and don't sweat it. stock it flaps open around 3k?

Thanks for the comments that have put my mind to rest. I went out last night, in my bathrobe, and put the tie back on. I really like the deeper sound and warble.
