M4

What's the deal with the new M4? Is it basically an M3? I've googled the heck out of it and can't find how this new car fits into the current lineup, because there isn't a 4 series

Basically any 3 Series coupe will now be a 4 series. I guess kinda like 5 series and 6 series?

The 3-Series will be split up into 3-Series Sedans (F30) and Touring (F31) and the 4-Series Coupes (F32) and Convertibles (F33).

That will follow with the M3 Sedan (F80), the M4 Coupe (F82) and the M4 Convertible (F83).

Rumors have BMW differentiating between the 3 Series and 4 Series with more than just re-naming. The 4 Series models are expected to be even more different than the E9x differences, possibly sportier, possibly slightly more power, possibly different fronts and rears, more upscale, etc.

This has been well documented on a BMW blog.

Know what struck me as I read this (slight thread jack, apologies)?

We were on 'E' basically forever, from the early E28 all the way up to the E9x cars, before the first F30 came to be. Now, seemingly a relative mini-hop ahead, and we're already at F83.

Course it speaks to more models across the lineup, etc - just kinda amazing.

My high school girl friend got to drive her mom's E3 BMW, which I think was called the "Bavaria". The model year of the car was about 1970.

Something I read said that the M3/M4 is going to differ significantly enough from the rest of the F3x lineup, that it's getting it's own chassis designation, the F80, F82 and F83, something that hasn't been done in the past, AFAIK.

The first with the F designation was the new gen 7 series (F01) then came the 5 series GT (F07), sedan 5 series (F10), the new X3 (F25), etc.
They haven't skipped that many numbers :P
