1 series: BMW tradition lives on!!!

Hello all!

Just wanted to share with you all an amazing thing that happened today. I was driving my 1 series M coupe around the neighborhood and came across a 135i at a 4-way stop. The drive gave me a wave and I the same. It was a pleasant surprise! Later in the afternoon I was driving my brothers 128i and came across another 135i going the opposite direction and, again, we both exchange nods and waves acknowledging one another! This really got me thinking about the 1 series and it's importance to the BMW enthusiast community. There are a great deal of BMWs in my community and they are driven mostly by people who have never even given a thought to flashing their headlights at another "Beamer." my feeling is that the original spirit of the 2002 lives on in the 1 series in many ways. It's small and kinda quirky and a blast to drive and the owners are unique in their own ways as well! All of these came together to help build the brand into what it is today. I feel honored to be a part of the "new brotherhood" and Im sure most of you feel the same! Sorry for rambling but I wanted to share my experience today with all of you and I hope we can make it even more common!

Cheers!

Chris

Here in lies a classic BMW debate! Lol yes it's "bimmer"... But it started when 2002 owners in the 1970s flashed their high beams at one another. This became known as "beaming" and the cars were known as "beamers" lol somewhere along the way it changed to bimmer though! At least this is the story I got from an old timer in BMW CCA! Haha

a bimmer is a BMW automobile and a beemer is a BMW motorcycle and a beamer is just a wonderful Beam of Light

I've always waved or flashed other 1ers and received the exact opposite response. Nothing but douchebags. Not even once have I received even a peace sign or wave... literally nothing but a sneer or scowl.

So I guess, to summarize, the stigma that BMW owners are major pricks remains alive and well in my area...

That is a nice story, but totally untrue. I owned 3 2002s in the 70s, and we did flash each other, but it was because they were so scarce and we wanted to recognize the other driver for being as smart as we were for buying a 2002. Most ppl thought they were "funny little foreign cars", but we owners knew different.

That friendliness is gone now, and yes, some BMWs are driven by those who know little about them, and drive them only for status. Sad, but true.

I have a book that says the 1 series is the reincarnation of the 2002

I want to live where you live. Every time I pass a 1er on the road it's a 128 with an old woman behind the wheel totally oblivious to the fact that they're driving a cult car (crd tcd)

In the 4 years I've been driving my car I've across two people that actually acknowledged me and gave the wave and smile back

that's the same way it is around here just two night a go sitting at a light, i can see another bimmer coming up behind me. they pulled right next to me and i had the top down. looked over to see another 1 with two people in it. so i gave them a friendly wave, the passenger looked at me like "who the hell are you", the same with the driver. so my daughter was in the car and she asked me if i knew them, i said no. just acknowledged a fellow bimmer owner, but even better a 1 series owner. unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened around here. so i can say to that i live by some major pricks in my area also

I guess the story I got was wrong! Haha or I guess it could be like the origin of the roundel! No one can really agree where it came from! And my observation was not about all BMWs. Usually drivers of 135s are the ones who wave where as virtually every diver of other late model BMWs dont care that they are driving a once enthusiast brand. Usually the drivers of enthusiast cars (e30, e24 etc. plus later model ///M cars such as the e36/7 and e36/8). Every time I pass one of these cars I try to wave! We drive a "Bayerische Motern Werke".... They drive a BMW. At least that's what I tell people when I say I drive the cars that I do!

Have to agree with some of the posters who are saying they get nothing in return of friendly gestures. It's the same here in Phoenix. I'm seeing more and more 1's, but can't get them to even acknowledge when I wave or give the universal signal of the "1".
I don't even try with 3's, 5's, 7's or X's. I'd be waving constantly and I'd get even less response.
Kind of dissapointing with the 1's though.

I always check out the other 1 series around here because it's mostly hot chicks driving the 128's in Los Angeles.

side-note: some cultures use the thumbs up as the American "finger gesture", just a friendly warning.

135is sometimes/often notice each other. Most 128i owners (not the ones who are 1Addicts) are like most 3 series owners - it's just a car.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but have you considered that the other driver may have just been caught by surprise and not reacted in time? I could see myself maybe driving past someone and not noticing or not realizing they were waving at me until they were past, lol. I'm not really expecting that attitude from other drivers, I guess.

I have waved at other 1ers, but see them so infrequently I can't even remember if I got a wave back. I think mostly no. There's one down the street from me and we do wave at each other when we pass (which actually isn't very often), and have talked in person once to (he was walking his dog or something).

Yup. To most the 128i was a cheap way to get a BMW badge on the hood. M-Sport and manual can be good tip offs to an enthusiast.

I'm pretty lucky I guess. I know two other 135i owners around here, and I know one of them is active on this website. I see them occasionally, and its always a double-honk, or a wave.

And actually, the other few 1 series I run into around here tend to be pretty nice. I remember one time, pacing myself with this dark blue 135i, and double honking, but he didn't notice. After I started pulling away, I guess he must have heard/seen me, because he sped up too and had a giant grin, coupled with an eager wave.

There are so many 3, 5, and 7 series around here, I don't bother acknowledging them. But you're right, OP, the 1 series has its own mini-fan base. And I love it!

This was my original point! Though not every 1er I come across does it... They are the ONLY ones who ever acknowledge. Even the M3s in my area dont... And you'd think they'd be driven by true enthusiasts....
