Detail addicts?
Anyone really into detailing their cars? I've seen some amazing work on the forums and even learned some techniques that I've never even heard of before. In the very near future I plan on buying Chemical Guys detailing starter kit ( Porter included ) as it seems like a good place to start off.
I've never used an orbital polisher before, back in the day it was all elbow grease, and it would take me around 7+ hrs to just wash, wax, buff, but I still loved every second of it. I've done my fair share of research, understand the order of events, and what each step of the process entails, but if there are any detail guru's out there, it would be nice to have an overseer with experience, tips and guidance.

Let me know what you want to know.... I'd be happy to help.

Awesome , thanks bro. For a sec there I was like... there's no way I'm the only person that details their own car here.
lol no worries, detailing is definitely one of the few things that the more meticulous & OCD you are the better you are. I'm leaving WA tomorrow, but I'll be back early Jan. If we can actually get some sun for once, would you be up for a wash, clay, glaze, and wax, assuming I have my kit by then and you have the time? That way I wouldn't be flying blind my 1st time with the porter, and you can throw me tips/suggestions/guidance as we go. Thanks again TTG

I love detailing my cars. I'm nowhere near the level of the pros on this board, of course. And I've yet to buy a PC, but will order one very soon.
There's nothing like spending 6 hours on a Sunday afternoon getting your car near-perfect. It helps me appreciate the design and beauty of the car that much more. I spent all last Sunday detailing my M3 for the first time, I had just got it home the previous day. I had a weird incident with the claying, and it left some marring on the paint. I used plenty of lube, however some spots have a strange rub mark. Not everywhere, of course. I don't know what went wrong, but I'm sure I can fix with a PC. After a thorough wash, the clay didn't really pick up much. There were some spots on the rear bumper than I could actually feel after washing. Of course the clay got that debris. But the rest of the car was pretty clean. |

Yep really gotten into it in the last few years...best thing I ever learned/tried was clay...what a difference and now my whole extended family has me do their cars too! Only downside is we live the NW where it rains 9 months a year; but even in the winter I'm out there

I have a yellow 855 t5R and a 06 V70R.... The sedan I have owned (which was a show car was sold to a collector up in canada) I would dump the m3 anyday of the week for a 854 T-5R that has ultra low miles now....

Nice stable there man.
What's the color combo on your V70 R? I've thought about getting rid of my S60 R for one. Yea those T5 R's are nice. I saw one a couple years with less than 30,000 miles on Swedespeed. I even bought the Autoart 1:18 scale model car.

I guess I would qualify as a detail addict though less so than a few years ago when I had a black e46M3. Yesterday I clayed, polished and applied Klasse AIO to my M3. Next step will be to apply a sealant, probably Duragloss which is much easier than Klasse SG. I have a Porter Cable and also a Makita Rotary. I love it when I have most of a full day to do it at leisure.

It's nice to see that we do have some detailing fiends out there. I'm actually flying back to WA today, looking forward to start detailing, but not really looking forward to the weather. Ordered my detailing kit, Porter Cable included, and really just waiting on a nice day to do this that sync's up with TTG's schedule.
If we try for this weekend, it's looking like our only option would be Sat/Sun, with Sunday looking like the better day. We'll see how it goes.

lol either this state has unpredictable weather or meteorologists are losing their touch.
Either way, 100% overcast is no bueno. Detailing GTG is postponed!!, which is probably for the best, a lot of people had schedule conflicts and this will allow more people that are interested to jump on in. Aiming for next weekend, leave a reply with what day and time of day is good for you if you're interested! * I'll edit this post as more information is gathered. *

I spent most of Sunday detailing my car. This is the first time I clayed and waxed using a PC. It is a lot of work! Came out pretty nice though. I washed and clayed it outside and then moved into the garage for waxing. I had to use a hair dryer to soften the clay enough to fold and blend it. By far the most work is prepping the car for wax. Just washing it well enough to apply wax is a lot of work. Waxing with the PC went pretty fast once the paint surface was ready.
And those comp wheels are murder to get clean even with a wheel brush.
