Open intake design=OEM design with good filter
So I was changing out my filter back to stock to just compare the sound and performance from my BMC and I had flashbacks to the "open" afe intake I had on my last car. First off the OEM m3 air filter is bigger than most AFE intake cone filters which is awesome! Second I really used to like the sound of the intake but it let a bunch of hot air in and drained performance so never kept it.
But I had my cover off and decided to go for a quick spin with the bms filter on but no intake cover which essentially is an open intake design that companies actually sell. Well surprised to see that there is almost no increase or improved sound compared to simply the BMS (or MS probably) filter and the fully assembled oem intake with lid. My thoughts are the hole in the hood pretty much lets all the great sound escape with no compromise of having to let hot air in-quite a brilliant air intake design. Probably the best I have ever seen. So as long as you have a good aftermarket filter you do not have to feel like you are not getting all of the sound the intake is making as it is pretty much all there stock. Now going back to orange OEM was night and day and the intake noise not nearly as visceral. Hard to believe how much difference with a good filter on this car because in the past the noise was much more subtle of a difference. Go buy your filters folks, great mod! |
