Question about Driving around w/ CEL

I just bought bought a used Dinan Middle Racing Exhaust. I think I already know the answer to this question. Is there any issue driving around for a few weeks with CEL light prior to getting a tune other than an annoying light on my dash? I assume the DME will adapt to the loss of the cats and simply indicate there is issue.

Thoughts?

You should have no problem. The Dinan tune will eliminate the CEL.........Phil

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I'm going to put the mid-pipe on and drive around for a while to make sure I can stand being catless. I understand a tune is necessary.

Hey M! The CEL/SES light is a warning, so you shouldn't have any problems, ie Limp mode, driving around with it.

Seriously though get rid of those pesky cats asap! (resonators are a must however!)

Really?? I can barely hear the exhaust after 5k rpms. Seems to me the sweet spot is between 3k-5k.

If you were way out of spec - rich or lean, the car would throw a specific DTC for that. This would be a different DTC than the catalyst inefficiency.

If there were a dangerous condition, then you would go into limp mode with the decreased redline.

So in summary, I severely doubt you have anything to worry about. There may be some areas where things aren't perfect from a tuning perspective, but I doubt they are dangerous. It's hard to say exactly how it is performing since most tuners don't waste time testing this setup vs. their programming.

This will vary car to car though - not all programming will handle a cat-free exhaust as well as the M3.

No problem driving with the CEL on (IF the faults are for cat efficiency only). Pulling the cats off should not cause a lean/rich condition far enough to trigger an OBD-II fault for fuel mixture. The car will probably run slightly too rich and may not make optimal power, but it's not going to hurt anything other than your nose

Also, you can go full throttle without issue too.
