MS filter, is it good idea to oil it?

I bought a new MS filter but this time also purchased the oil and cleaner. The directions from MS say to not use it without the oil. I had another one in the M3 for a few years with out oil and worked fine.

I added oil to the new one and didn't go overboard but after it's been installed for a few days, I found a somewhat small puddle of it on the ground below the engine. The oil slowely leaked out and through the drain hole of the air-filter box.

I've heard of issues that the oil could contaminate the O2 sensors in the air induction. But the MS instructions say it won't hurt the sensors.

What do you all think? Should I clean the filter of the oil? Is it ok to use it as instructed by MS?

I just installed a new MS filter in my car and the directions said it comes oiled from the factory and is ready to be installed. If you oiled a new filter then there's a good chance it's over oiled especially if it's so saturated it's dripping

Oiled filters like K&N usually come pre-oiled. The cleaner and oil kit is for the periodic cleaning and reoiling.

Maybe I should read the F&^KING Bold headline on the instructions!!!

I'll have to clean it now and re-oil.

Hehe. No big deal.

FYI. No o2's in intake side; all on exhaust side.

On cars with a mass airflow sensor, the oil can foul it up and cause metering and fueling issues. M3 does not have a mass airflow sensor. Enjoy the new filter!

Don't worry, you didn't do any harm by oiling the filter.

As mentioned above the only harm from over-oiled filters is that it fouls MAF (mass air flow) sensors and they no longer function properly. The S65 doesn't use a MAF sensor in the intake system only a MAP sensor and IAT sensor both of which won't be affected by the oil.

Leave your filter alone, it is fine. Clean and re-oil it once it gets dirty in 10 or 15K miles.
