$800 intake vs $80 filter. Any difference?

I know it is only a minor mod, but is there really any difference either in sound or the small hp gain? Is all that extra money just for a nice looking tube with a designer name?

Nice tubing and name is the benefit of the intake.

I believe the consensus is the drop in filter is all you need (and even then many believe there is nominal benefit at the risk of less filtering)

some try to claim 3 more hp with the full intake. I call BS on it. In fact the only time I remember seeing gains on a dyno with one are when the dyno is done by the manufacturer of the intake.

Dinan and EAS (Macht Schnell) both claim gains based on actual dyno time. A large number of people claim they are lying without any data to back it up. Summary: we need more independent dynos.

Or just independent dyno's. Both companies here have an invested interest in making the product show gains.

Funny how well respected IND never posted their dyno of the product

Well if IND got bad results, and didn't post them, then that is even worse. I mean let's spell it out since that is what you are implying. By the way, IND sells that intake still.

Well, ultimately it's YOUR $$ and only you can decide what you want to spend it on. I did the AFE stage 2(and iirc it was about $400) because someone on here(won't mention names) got 6 rwhp with it, so i did it and the scoops. Did i notice anything? Not really. I also did UDPs, midpipe, and rear exhaust and now a tune (Evolve). So by now, who knows what actually did what I just know the car is/feels faster than stock Would i do it over again? Probably so, because $400 is not THAT big of a deal to me.

IND claims that they only sell quality products. Clearly if they are selling an intake that does not make power, that would hurt their reputation - that's just common sense.

The product is a quality product (build, fitment, etc)... the gains are what are suspect. IND would not test every product it sells to verify manufacturer claims, what vendor would. If IND said there were gains, I would believe it. If IND is silent on the matter, then I would want to see independent verification.

You also have to remember that lots of guys buy intakes for the look, sound and even the chance of gains.
