Houston, we have a problem!!!

Driving from Laredo to houston and suddenly got an engine error. Now reduced output... I just recently installed an intake and I don\'t know if that had anything to do with it... My engine SOUNDS LIKE SHIT!!!! I will try to make it to Houston. Where can I take it..??

Highly doubt it's the intake unless there was some install error involved. Check my sig, I "don't" run as non-stock of an intake design as you can get off-the-shelf right now, and after 7 track days, 0 problems....

Edit: I see that you drive a 2008. Sounds like your idle valve finally decided to let go? Have you ever had your idle valve replaced? Some people (like me) have it go out early (4,XXX miles) and some people (a friend) have theirs go out late (26,XXX miles).

Trust me Sean, yours will go eventually. However, it's on a TSB and covered under warranty. Just drive hard before your warranty is gone. It's seriously not a big deal though, it's now like a 3 day fix.

Hell, it might even be covered out of warranty? It's a super common problem on 2008's.

I was just driving when this happened. Funny you should mention idle valve because for the past few days I've noticed a slightly higher idle at start and what I thought to be less throttle response. I was thinking that it was my intake. I'm still driving now passing three rivers. Not from the Houston area but considering leaving my car there to get seen. Any suggestions..?

Yeah, if idle valve goes out your car will limp, it's not too much of a biggie. It's hard to mess up intake install on M3.

BTW, by intake, what do you mean? Filter? aFe? Macht Schnell? Dinan? Or something closer to what I "don't" have according to my sig?

Oh, and btw, feel free to call BMW roadside if you're trip to the dealer is going too slow....(no idea where you're out at and where you're headed). They'll tow your car there. Just be careful that the dealer won't blame you for something that would normally be covered on your intake just because you have one (they do stupid things, as you know).

Yeah, who cares if they can replicate it or not, go complain about it now.

If you go in maybe twice, and complain, then if it breaks out of warranty (I have no idea why yours has lasted so long) at least there will be a precedent for it.

But of course, I in no way condone the above. Seriously.

So many people have this idle control valve issue it's unreal.

You are not alone.... the V10 guys suffer from it aswell.

The problem can get worse with a software write to the ECU or any type of flash at that.... even if it's just a speed limiter removal or dealer update.

If you experience any type of idle roughness or limp mode get it seen to rather than panick.

I don't think you would need to because the problem was very common on the '08s. I'm sure it's on the service bulletin somewhere, it's just that if you don't complain about it, they just assume you are one of the lucky few.

Any other symptoms to complain about?

I'm not sure that just by saying that they will switch the valve.

I also havent had problems... thats why I ask

Updates: drove for some time in limp mode then pulled over for a little break from driving. When I started her up again, limp mode was gone and everything seems fine. Made it to Houston and even drove back home to the rgv without anymore issues. I have since replaced my oem intake and filter and will be taking her in for service today. Truth be told I will be mentioning the icv. Thanks for everyones help..
