Z4 M Service details

Hi there,

I have a 2007 Z4 M Coupe with 15,000km (9,300 miles) which is due for an oil service in 1,500kms. According to the log books the last service was done almost 2yrs ago at 6,000kms (3,700 miles) and all that was ticked was brake fluid (refer attached). Please also note that I checked with BMW before I bought the vehicle and the running in service was done but they forgot to stamp the log books which I need to get done.

Can anyone please tell me what I should be doing at the next service, perhaps providing me with a full list as my sisters husband is a mechanic and will be doing the service so I want to make sure I get everything done correctly.

I was also told by BMW to not touch the vanos. Is this correct?

Factory service maintenance checklist attached ---It's a start, anyway.

Valves can be checked anytime, but with <10K miles yours are probably fine. Dealer will most likely refuse to check them without a specific complaint.

The computer will tell you when it believes the car needs Inspection I, usually around 20K mi ±4K.

Things you should probably have checked over and above the factory list include: Engine mount bolts (they can break) and rear shock mounts. Dealers may or may not actually check these without a complaint.

It couldn't hurt to change the plugs too, and inspect your tires. The factory recommends that fuel injector cleaner be used regularly; there's a TSB on that somewhere.

I'm sure there's more; others are invited to chime in.

You're a legend thanks so much. Whats a TSB?

Just out of curiosity what is an Inspection I and Inspection II service? Also my brother in-law can clear the service code, however because he isn’t a BMW mechanic he doesn’t have the diagnostic machine to check if the car has any error codes, is this import to check at each service which would then mean I need to take my car to a BMW service centre? Sorry for all the questions but this is my first M car and my first service since ownership.

TSB (or SIB) Technical service (instruction) bulletin -- basically an an official directive to dealers on a service procedure or technical detail.

Inspection I and II are major engine services covering substantially more than an oil change. Both involve removing the valve cover and checking/reshimming the valves as required, plus other tasks. Takes a full day. The actual procedures to be done are on the attachment from my first reply. These are major milestone services for the car.

As for reading/clearing codes - if you have a persistent warning light, I highly recommend having the codes read ASAP. Otherwise, it's routine. The computers are pretty sensitive; they will complain if anything significant is wrong.

from the manual what i read. Insepction II is your second oil change. It should fall at 30k miles since its a 15k interval.

This can't be right- the first change should be the 1200 mile break in service, then oil, inspection 1, oil, inspection 2, (repeats cycle)

Note that there is an oil change during Inspection 1 and 2..

Thats what i meant. 1200 then 15000 then 30000 then 45000 then 60000.

Oil, ins 1, oil, ins 2.

If you change your oil at every 7500 since bmw does it at 15k only, it should go:

1200 break in, yourself oil, 15000, yourself oil, inspec 1, yourself oil, 45k, yourself oil, inspection 2

Interesting I though the oil change was every 20,000km here in EU.

15k miles = 24k km

My last oil change was at 39k km and I'm hitting 48k km right now, should I do an oil change on my own? Computer says next oil change is in 9k km.

Hmm. I changed my oil and reset the thing- and it said 25K Km until Inspection

I have a buddy with an e46 m3. He was told to change his oil every 3k miles. Same engine, same tws motorsport oil. Why is bmw saying we need to change our oil every 15k? Something isnt adding up.

It's wasteful to change synthetic every 3000 miles, they were probably trying to get him in often.

Many people believe the 15k interval is too high, and they suggest that so they can save money on the ultimate service.

7500 is a good in-between that people like to do.

Ok I checked my service book ...

First change of course at 2,000km (1,300miles)
Second oil change at 18,000km (11,000miles)
Third change at 35,000km (22,000miles)

All done by BMW for free. Next oil change is scheduled at 55,000km (34,000miles).

So it seems that I'm at 20,000km (12,400miles) schedule.

As to why BMW says 25,000km (15,000miles) is okay, it's because they are paying for it I asked my friend who owns a car service and he confirmed that if you are driving those cars hard (as they were build for) you should change the oil yourself between the BMW schedules.

As you may know my car is due for a service in 1000kms, so I'll be getting it done in the next couple of weeks. One thing that I have noticed is that at random times when I'm bringing the car to a stand still the idle slightly drops as I disengage the clutch and put it in neutral. Does anyone know why it may be doing this?
