Rattling noise from engine.
Hey guys just got a 2012 135i and im hearing some weird rattling noise during idle after a cold start. Brought it in to the dealer and they said they couldnt hear anything. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! (the noise is not the fuel injectors firing)

The dealer actually told me to leave it at the dealership for 2 nights so the engine can cool down. (WTH)? I have a big feeling they are going to rape my cars if I leave it there. I saw them floor a couple cars down the block from the dealership a few times. :'(

Hi
Same here mate.
I did notice tha rattling sound upon cold start up but after the engine warms up, no problems at all. I guess maybe the sound sound of Vanos = Valvetronic. |

Some of the rattling you hear is the Direct Injection (D.I.). It kind of sounds like knock or dieseling. It is NORMAL.
I noticed when I switched from Mobil-1 0w40 oil to German Castrol RS Edge 0w40, my engine ran a lot quieter (and cooler!), even when cold. But some noise is to be expected with the N54/N55 engines. The other point of rattles can be your flywheel... IF you have a manual trans... and you have the car in neutral... you will hear the flywheel rattle some. This is also normal. Put your foot on the clutch and it goes away. This is teh dual mass flywheel springs rattling some. Dackel |

Mine's DCT as well.
Went around to ask a few authorise BMW workshop, they say the type of engine oil you are running will affect the rattling noise. I am currently using BMW recommended 5W30 Castrol SLX professional Longtec LL01. Might be too thin, will cause abit of noise. Can I run any other approved oil to reduced the rattling noise. Thanks. |

Try the oil that the dealers sell. ie the BMW oil. I know it is more expensive... but this is why I run Castrol RS Edge oil... because I decided to test it (coming from Mobil-1 oil) and it really made the engine a lot quieter. There is a SW version that will make the engine quieter at idle, but it really kills the performance of the engine. Atleast that what I noticed. here is a 200+ page thread on the SW versions... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...7#post10101747 Change your engine oil to the BMW stuff and report back. Dackel |

the rattle could also be the wastegate . because it sounds like the problem i was having its mainly at cold starts and can hear a lil at idle . the wastegate was rattling bad and its at bmw right now getting the turbo replaced because they are one unit

Are you sure it is not the fuel injectors? Direct injection makes A LOT of noise compared to other engine designs. Almost sounds like the engine has detonation (engine ping rattle) or a diesel when you rev it. Normal N54/N55 sounds.

they do make a good amount of noise but my dealer confirmed that there was a loud rattle coming from the wastegate and its a common problem on the n54

BEFORE you have your dealer try to repair that wastegate rattle you better read this (huge) thread on it... Reply to thread 'Has anyone contacted BMW regarding 29.2 and lag? http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10205238#post10205238 BMW "repair" is more of a detune via new SW update. NO MECHANICAL REPAIRS. BMW used to replace both turbos but now they can get by with a detune SW "update". |
