So I destroyed my brakes

Ran Hawk HPS pads for 2 trackdays and completely used them. My mistake for not verifying after each session...I honestly thought they would last past 2 days. Anyways, ended up being metal on metal and warped the pads, piston and rotors. Instead of buying stock again, decided to upgrade . Car was not driveable so had it towed to garage and installed the kit. Wheels are stock 18s 9.5 all around. 12mm spacer in the rear but not needed.

So here goes

Destruction:

A new set of pads, and you used them up and warped the rotors in 2 track days??!? Holy wow - are these cars that hard on brakes??

Nice upgrade though... very very nice.

I hope Persian see's this. He almost got those pads for the track. They are NOT a track pad. They're not even that great of a street pad.
StopTech makes the Sport pad for the OEM calipers that would be a much better street/track pad.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

yeah they're complete trash. i had less fade with oem. same deal with cool carbons. thought they may be a bit better than stock...not track-only, but just slightly better

last time im ever listening to anyone on the forums for advice.

Yeah, HPS are horrible pads. I'd never run those on a track again, after I had a very similar experience. They are ok until they overheat and then they fall apart and basically never come back. Nice solution! Anyone who has a good experience is just slow (not that there is anything wrong with that!)

No, but some drivers are. Not to bash the OP, since the pad choice was a big part of the problem. But, brakes are consummable, and it's just a matter of weight, speed, and brake demand vs. brake capacity. If you burn through the pads with a fully track-ready brake system, you would see similar damage.

Hawk HPS's sure are not a track pad as you have discovered. It is a different world when you run a BBK with proper track dedicated pads. This year on my new car I went with a Stoptech 380/355 setup and been using Pagid RS29's and my brake concerns have been a thing of the past.8 trackdays so far and I will changing out my orginal front RS 29's which of course only takes about 5 minutes per corner when changing tires.

yeah that's the fun part. one of the main reasons i didn't want to keep stock as changing takes like 15-20/corner. stupid easy with this kit

Just curious, does anyone have experience with the HP+'s? That's what I was planning on putting on the car for track duty. I've ran them before on other cars and had good luck, but I'd rather not waste my time if you guys think they'll do the same thing as the HPS's. Thanks.

This is one of those issues that has to be determined by the individual driver; just too many variables to depend on forum advice. If you have had good luck with these pads before under similar conditions, no need not to try them now. I have had good luck so far with the high performance street pads that StopTech furnishes with its brake system. I have friends who would melt them in a day, on the same track. These ST pads, as well as the HP+, are not track pads, but that doesn't mean they will not work for you. It's always preferred to use the least aggressive pad that does the job.

I thought the Hawk HP+'s were a track pad? I definitely agree with you on what works for one does not necessarily work for all. I ran HP+'s on a number of cars, but all of them had better venting than the M3 does, and all of them had big brake kits that I either installed, or came from the factory. I definitely am looking for a pad that won't kill my rotors in one weekend. Otherwise I am going to have to install a big brake kit on the car and I am really trying to avoid that.
I'll take a look again at the HP+'s, but I swear those are track pads. Either that, or I've gotten extremely lucky with them and must be lighter on the brakes than I thought. Thanks a lot for the response. I'm also going to check and see if Stoptech makes a pad for track use on the factory brake system. Appreciate it!

the hp+ pads are double duty pads that can be used on the street with some track use. They arent dedicated track pads. Same is true for the stoptech street performance pads that i am on right now.

Btw, i've had good experience with hp+. I am no where near as hard on the brakes as gewow. I've even done hpde's with oem pads with minimal fade - maybe slight sponginess towards the end of the sessions but nothing major. It all depends on how hard u are on brakes and ur driving style.

I use the Hawk blue pads in the front, and the +'s in the rear. Seems to work decently well for me, but nothing like a bbk. The HPS's are not up for the track duty. Good luck with the new AP BBK!
