Where are all the BMWs on the road?
Just returned to Germany after driving/traveling over 3000 miles through Georgia, South Carolina, Texas and Florida....I saw probably 20-30 BMWs...most older 3 series. I only saw four 1 series, two verts and two coupes. I never realized the 1's were so rare.
But I did see over 50 hummers and hundreds if not thousands of SUVs and trucks...I think in Texas I saw 60-70 percent trucks and large SUVs.. Where are all the beemers? |

DC must be western germany
Not many 1 series here in DC area but many 3 and 5 series. In fact this region is full of German metal.
There were 4 1ers that showed up at the National Chapter Driving school in June. |

It's sort of like waving at Harley riders when I'm on my BMW bike - most of them won't even wave at each other! Tom |

I see lots of BMWs in the Philly area, but very few 1 series. Someone near where I live has a 128i vert, but I don't think I've ever seen a 135i on the road. It's mostly 3 series and SUVs around here.

There are thick and thin parts of the USA for BMW's. Boston is huge, So-Cal and the big parts of Forida are huge.
Chicago, Philly, New York, DC, all have strong populations. (I think a lot of it is due to where the first dealerships were started back when BMW was first imported.) And then it starts to trickle off. In Cleveland here the population is ok. But as you move south and west from the atlantic coast delars and intrest drops off fast. I was just planning a road trip out to visit my friends house they just moved to in Lucedale Mississippi, and once I pass Nashville, I won't be within reasonable towing distance of a BMW dealership untill I make my return trip to nasheville. I am suprised you didn't see more in South Carolina. By the Performance center in Spartanburg there was a pretty strong population. Long story longer, BMWs make up a fairly small percentage of the vehicles on the road here in the USA. Also Southerners love Trucks, my speculation is that the truck has an air of work to it, hard working is seen in prety high esteem in the south and I think the Truck represents a projection of working and having a need for the Truck. Whereas a car would be a frivolous purchace since it is percieved to only be good for moving people around in and not for doing work. More a luxury purchase as opposed to the Truck which you "Need" for Work. Last edited by Guildenstern; 07-17-2011 at 03:07 PM.. |

Not if you are European, Beemer is used for cars as well as motorcycles in Europe more than bimmer. America somehow managed to botch the original translation (you know, like colour becoming color, aluminium becoming aluminum, etc).

They are pretty sparse around here too. I've only seen 3 other 1er's, 135i coupe in AW (ErvGotti, a member on here), a 135i vert in Cashmere, and a 128i coupe in SG. I've seen quite a few 3er's, and one 5 series in black. Its sad that I've seen so few that I can list what color they were
Bimmers were a dime-a-dozen in Germany. |
