Ship sank (or more likely it is simply out of range)

Haha I got caught up in the vessel tracking and it has been out of range for 24+ hours... I figure in 2011 a vessel carrier with millions of dollars in goods (and more importantly my 1m) would be able to communicate its position via satellite.

It's due in Halifax on the 18th, Brunswick on the 25th. I wonder how long it will take to get to Houston afterwards?

Cargo ship sinks with 2,800 cars

Published Date: 15 December 2002
A 50,000 tonne cargo ship carrying more than 2,800 brand new cars sank in the English Channel early yesterday morning after colliding with another vessel.
The Tricolor, a Norwegian-registered car carrier, had 2,862 cars on board as well as 77 containers, when it collided with the Kariba, a container ship, in thick fog 30 miles east of Ramsgate at around 1.30am. It took just 90 minutes to sink.

The Tricolor is worth £25m. Its cargo of BMWs, Saabs and Volvos could be worth around £70m at showroom prices. The ship was en route for Southampton from Zeebrugge.

Gulp...

Franklin is it only a few days from arrival at port to Houston? That would be SWEET! I'm leaving town August 12th for 2 weeks I'm afraid it will be sitting at the dealership that entire time.

I used 2 sites to track my ship-Otello

http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/index.html

http://marinetraffic.com/ais/

Just type in your ships name. There are periods when it will be out of range.

My car just dropped off in Brunswick yesterday

You are realisticly looking at 5-10 days to clear customs(takes longer since ED cars are considered used) and VPC. So I would think your car will be in Houston 1st/2nd week of August.

Either way you will get yours before me as I am waiting on PCD which is about 3+ weeks waiting for a delivery date

How long does the "in-transit" stage typically take?

How were you able to obtain ship tracking info? Did your CA provide you with the ship's name?

It will take approximately 6-8 weeks to the East coast and 8-10 weeks to the West Coast from drop off date for a car to arrive at your BMW center for final delivery. Be advised that if you drop off your car at any other location than Germany that arrival time will be longer.

BMW ED at 800-932-0831 can give you ships name with your VIN or production number once you drop your car off. Use the links on my previous post to track the ship.

This site has very useful info on ED and redelivery with plenty of links

Ordered a 135i back in 2009, waited 6 months and was informed by the dealer that the container with my vehicle was lost at sea when the ship encountered a storm. Just placed an order for a 1M, it won't arrive until later this year, early next year.

The cars are in containers? Ive seen pics and videos and all the cars are strapped down in the ship, like a huge parking garage.

I think the issue is the ships broadcast their position, but there is no equipemt to pick it up. It is a little odd that ships of this size just dissappear...

My 1M is on the K-Line California Highway, it went silent on 7/4 and just popped up on 7/11 and will be in port 7/14. The sites listed in the other posts were what I used to find it. Also helps to the the ship call sign and/or MMSI # which is easily found searching the ship name on the internet.

Yes, where I am at now, they put the cars on containers then unload/drive them off when they arrive.

Sunk

Ha!

That cargo ship that sunk in 2002 was on the way to pick up my 2003 MINI! I damn near fell out of my chair when I heard the news.

Cars are shipped in container ships not individuial containers, and yes the ship is set up as a multi-multi level parking garage with moveable decks and cars are strapped to racks..

It is quite the site to see one of thes unload. Its like a VW in a circus....they just keep coming and coming and coming.

Thats what I thought a RORO vessel (roll on/roll off)

So a container cant get lost in a storm

I wish

I'm doing PCD which the waiting time is 3+ weeks for a delivery date. So early-mid August is probably realistic.

We must meet with Snowfro to get a group pic when our cars get here, all three colors would be neat in one photo
