Im sure I wont be the only one to suggest this, but for the love of god, do not install performance mods with the intent of driving like a crazy person with a FI engine that only has 10 miles on it...

I would wait until you've broken in the engine, i.e. driving the car for atleast 500 miles calmly and nothing WOT or above 3500 rpm. This is not difficult as this car makes enough power to drive within that range and still get where your going just fine.

Some people think this is not necessary, I and many many others do.

I think its kinda funny how before you even had the car, you had well over $1500 worth of mods already lined up to put into it before even having driven the thing...got some money to give away?

congrats on the car!!! I agree with thez. the FMIC is fine, it provides lots of extra cold air for the turbos. that's not a bad thing at all. the downpipes as well aren't a bad thing. they'll provide more room to breathe for the turbos.

but the JB3... don't do it yet! properly break in the engine. 3500 might be pushing the bounds of reasonability, but i didn't go over 4500K for the first 500 miles and I didn't go WOT or to redline for the first 800ish.

though, some people don't really believe in engine "break-in" ..but if BMW doesn't want their ///M engines to be driven hard for a thousand or so miles (and then have the oil changed after break in), then I believe all their cars should be treated the same..

It's your car, so do what you want with it, but I HIGHLY suggest doing some research on "proper" engine break-in procedures. Hard pulls are the way to go. Throw those goodies on there and beat it up! Properly, of course.

Have you ever rebuilt an engine in your life? That is the proper way to break-in an engine. I know not everybody agrees with that, but a vast majority of engine builders, be it two storke or four, agree.

^I've heard this a lot. Is it something about getting the piston rings to seal properly? Because I think this occurs within the first 20 (or 50 or something like that) miles. After that, I would personally baby it a bit, though I know lots of people who say it's not necessary. Best of both worlds is to drive it like a madman from the dealership, and then baby it for a while afterwards

I was actually tempted to buy several of these mods before I even got the car, haha. But yes, true gearheads are very odd people indeed. But I also completely understand your perspective, it is a bit crazy. But, sometimes that is a good thing.

Yes quite a few. Engines that are broken fast will be going into competition & need to be ready to give maximum performance right away. Of course they will be torn down after a specific number of hours & built up again, if the parts are within spec. Out of spec parts will be pulled & replaced with new units.

An engine for normal street use should get the kind of break-in that the factory recommends to achieve its maximum service life since maximum power output is not needed on day one.

BTW the urban legend "fast break-in" web site is by a guy who does competition air cooled motorcycle engines which are a whole other ball game.
