It definitely solves the M1 vs 1M dilemma. Never understood why they didn't do this years ago as it just makes sense.

Well, if they are scrapping the 1-series altogether maybe that will make our cars just that much more rare and desirable...

agreed. I can understand the 1 to 2 series transition, assuming that they fill the void with a REALLY small and lightweight 1 series. I don't see the point in a "4 series" tho...

I concur, BMW usually has done a good job of sticking with traditions but lately that hasn't been the case. I got a feeling this won't carry on to the following model change, most customers will just get confused. Ford tried this years ago when it changed the Taurus name to the Ford Five Hundred. That didn't last too long and sales weren't that great despite being an okay car. BMW has got to stick to it's fundamentals that have made it was it is today.

When you put it into perspective it isn't that bad.... the 6 series is/was similar to a 5 series (bloated luxo-barge, except with 2 doors vs. 4) and the 8 series was similar to the 7, except two doors.... this way the 2/4/6/and hopefully 8 series cars will be 2 doors... whereas the 1/3/5/7 are four door cars.
Makes sense to me, but it does sort of sully the M3's tradition in particular. People will adapt, the enthusiasts will accept it over time, and the general populace just want a BMW of some sort.

Consider this: The 6-series is a 2-door version of the 5-series. Hasn't seemed to hurt those model lines...so maybe there's an M4 in the future?
