Braille 21lb Battery
I just got this in the mail from HP Autowerks. Any idea how to go about installing it? I read a horror story on the E9X forum about a guy who changed his battery and it exploded.
Do I need to charge it or figure out how much of a charge it has before hand? Do I just disconnect the stock battery and do a swap?

I would try just changing it out...if the car doesn't start then you know it needs a charge.

It didn't come with instructions? Sorry to ask the obvious question first.
If it's a sealed battery then it should have a charge already. You could always put it on a charger to see what the level is, it won't hurt it. |

The OEM battery is fine, I just wanted a lighter battery. The OEM battery weighs close to 70 lbs. I figured a 50 lb weight loss is pretty good. I'm going to put the OEM battery on a tender so that I can put it back in for the winter.

Well, installation was very easy and the car is running just fine. Only thing I had to do was reset the clock and date. Started it up and drove it around, all is well.
Something surprising, I had read multiple posts and heard from people that the stock battery weighs close to 60-70 lbs... not exactly true. I had an BMW Exide battery that weighed in at about 41 lbs. The Braille battery and HP Autowerks tray weighed in at about 23 lbs... so roughly a 20 lb savings. Not too bad for a couple hundred bucks.

Let us know when your Braille battery goes BOOM!
You should code the battery to the car. Ofcourse it is working so far without registering it. Didn't you read that thread on the e90 forum? |

Since you have asked the question, I'm guessing you have not read the entire thread! There is a huge difference when changing a battery that is 4-5 years old, compared to less than 1 year old.

I read that you mentioned the e90 thread. But for what ever reason you don't think you need to register your new battery. That is why I mentioned it. I was trying to be sarcastic.
I am not being negative, I am rather an upbeat (positive) person. I just don't understand the need to replace a good battery with a good lighter one. ? Not in a street car. I really doubt there is a feel able or even a measureable difference. |
