Signs of HPFP?
Hi guys.
I noticed in the past couple weeks there were maybe 2 or 3 times when the car started, dropped to 400rpm, sputtered, bounced up to 1800rpm and then settled after a bit. I took note, but the car drove fine after. This afternoon I started the car and I immediately got the 'limp' mode engine icon pop up. I let it sit for a minute and it didn't go away so I shut her down (thinking HPFP) and went in the girlfriends car. Later this evening I managed to start the car OK and drove it around, but come Monday I plan to take her in. So is this HPFP for sure? If so, this will be the first one to go. 61k km on the original. It was reprogrammed as per the recall a few months back as well...

About a week ago I had the rpms bounce around and shuddering at cold startup. It's been fine ever since so maybe some bad gas?
I don't know, I just had the HPFP replaced last month (recall - the old one had zero problems). From what I've read the first sign of HPFP failure is long cranks, but that limp mode you have would make me take it in too. |

I had a rough idle issue with my 944 a few years back, but that was slightly different... it was idling rough with the rpms bouncing around all the time. That ended up being a vacuum leak and some hoses were replaced.
As for the 1er, I did note some longer crank times back in January or February when it was cold outside, but that seems to have gone away with the warmer weather.

As they made alterations for the failing pumps, long cranks are not always the leading symptom. Pretty much anything like you mentioned is the HPFP or the LPFP until proven to be something else IMO. Btw, I think an SES light that comes on while going up hills is a more common symptom than long cranks anyways.

It seems fine today
The first time the shuddering and bouncing rpms happened was after I didn't drive it for a couple days. If I drive the car more regularly it doesn't seem to happen.

In the vid that jeremydgreat links us to for the warning signs of HPFP issues, the guy is starting his car with the pushbutton, 'without' the fob pressed into the dash hole???
WTF??? Can someone explain how this works? I tried it today with the fob in the car, but not plugged into the hole...not so much! Thanks! |

Can someone answer another a$$enine question for me then too??
See`n as I don`t have the Comfort Access...is it ok if I leave the fob in the center console when it`s in the garage? The dealer told me NOT to do that, becuase it would drain the battery over a period of a few days of not driving it. I`m thinking that`s just the standard response, since MOST people DON`T drive stripped down 1èrs? Anyone know for sure? `Cause I do have a bad habit of leaving the keys in my cars when in the garage. ...............and NO, I`m not telling where I live!! |

I had the recall HPFP replaced in January 2011. They also replaced 3 injectors. I ask why only 3? SA said the part numbers on the others are ok.
2 days ago driving home from work... sprutter.... loss of power... engine light. I limped home. This was Friday. My dealer has service hours Saturday mornings. I went to them and explained the issue. The pulled codes and one of the 3 injectors.. that had NOT been replace failed. They replaced the other 3 and all is well. So, the symtoms are not always the pump. The injectors can fail also. I am hoping I am good to go now till 100K. I'm at 40k now. |

Wow, that is the exact situation that I had today on my way home. My fuel pump was replaced in March and only 3 of the 6 fuel injectors got replaced. Today, while on a hill, i got check engine light and reduced power (barely enough to get moving). Got home, shut down and restarted the car and all was OK. I wonder how long till it happens again. |
