Worthwhile Upgrade

Car went in for a couple of jobs last week.

Software update,
Car feels much better from cold and at slower speeds now.

Throttle response is better when the Power button isn't on.

While in I had the front wheels rebalanced slight vibration a 70mph has now gone

Also a between oil change, oil change.

Grabbed a couple of work in progress shots

Job done and back at work

Hi, can I ask how you persuaded them to do the software upgrade... was it free? My warranty runs out in July and I'd really like to get the latest software installed prior to then as apparently the DCT software has been further improved in the 18months since my last update.

I mentioned to the dealer ,my car fluffed and popped around while on cold start and early warm up. They mentioned the software update, mine isn't DCT though, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference, the workshop foreman did say the upgrade cover a multitude of areas and is called a quality enhancement upgrade

I'd be interested in knowing about this, do you know if a the dealer had a recall notice..?

I was only ever aware that the upgrade was for the DCT's having spoke with BMW. I'm a non DCT as well.

Not a recall as such, but a TSB definitely.

I think the cold start air fans have been programmed to run a bit longer, to try and warm the Cats up quicker

I had the winter tyres swapped to the summers on monday by the dealer and noticed a slight vibration in the steering wheel between 65-75 mph. Going to give the dealer a call and get it checked.

I'd be interested in the software upgrade too. Any way of checking which software version is currently installed?

For DCT guys the last major software update was around march 2010...this is a must have update as it gives a serious improvement in DCT drivability.
There have been other software updates since then to other modules but nothing appears to have been of much importance....the last one seems to have fixed the rough start up that was introduced in one of the earlier updates, hard to be sure which one as they are cumulative..but its probably worth asking for if you have a poor start up (extra raunchy with the engine speed hunting up and down the rev range), there doesn't seem to have been any downsides except I've lost "Night view" on my iDrive.
I had the the rough start update flashed to my car on its last visit without even asking for it.
You can only have the dealer check what software version you have.

I didn't have the fluctuating speed, but did have rough running until the engine warmed up, it felt like I was driving a Mk2 Escort without the choke pulled out

BTW I still have night mode on the NAV

My local Sytner puts on the latest software as a matter of course. It's such a quick job now with the new software compared to progman of yore.

Really? Were you there or did they just tell you? Sounds way too long from my dealings with my local senior tech. The new system crashes less too apparently.

A very good mate and drinking buddy is the workshop foreman. He did the upgrade for me. He plugged it in at 8.05am and I collected it at 2.30pm the same day.He showed me a print out of what the upgrade covered, most of which was BMW code, which meant feck all too me.

Well thanks to this thread I've just returned from getting my software upgraded. Strangely, they couldn't find any of the problems I told them about with the cold start and missed DCT gear changes,...

But they said there was a new version of software available and so have updated the car...

Old level code: E89X-90-06-810
New level code: E89X-11-03-502

Haven't had a chance to drive the car properly since so can't really comment on any improvements, but as my software hadn't been upgraded for 18months (not since the first proper fix for the DCT problems), I'm hopeful it will be even better. Also happy to get the latest version before the warranty runs out in the summer.

My update in March 2010 was E89-10-03-504
so thats only one or two updates from mine to yours (504 to 502) in the year March 2010 to March 2011.

Hi Guys, how can you find out which version is installed? I have an 09 M3 DCT and get the problem with the gearbox being slow to re-engage after braking (such as a roundabout).

Cheers

Only your dealer can tell you which S/W version you have.
Explain your problem to them, sprinkle in a few words like "dangerous", exaggerate if necessary and they should load the latest S/W version onto your car under warranty.
