I really wanted a sunroof for my 1m so my dealer put in a special order for it to be installed. We are waiting to hear back from the factory on if they are able to accommodate.

I have heard two separate issues with the sunroof (1) there was no variant crash testing of the car. That said, they did not build a cf roof or sunroof and crash tested the vehicle.

(2) I am pretty sure the chassi (body, roof and rear upper 3/4 panels ) are all one piece and are likely pre-made. That said, I don't think they have people in the factory cutting out sheet metal for sunroofs.

I am pretty sure the opening for the sunroof is a punched metal piece more than an opening that is hand cut.

It does not have sun roof option.

And I don't believe that BMW will make a customized 1M with a sunroof, by just asking for it via dealership , as raptor would like in the previous post.

unless raptor is a rich and dirty $on of a bi$$

He elitt13, interesting point here. Can you please share how you learned about the difference in roof construction for the 1M? Thx

Maybe in MY 2012 when they change VO for MC BLUE and they upgraded the engine to 400hp.

There is also a third issue: BMW Canada said that it isn't available.

"The Optional Equipment program is unique to the 1 Series M Coupé to simplify the ordering process:
- Note: An Electric Glass Sunroof is not available from the factory
- Optional Navigation and Executive Packages are available separately
Please note that production will be limited on the 1 Series M Coupé. The BMW Sales Operations Department will
communicate allocation under separate cover. Please also note that no special orders for paint,
upholsteries, or trims will be accepted for the 1 Series M Coupé due to plant restrictions."

Request for a custom sunroof= FAIL

I think you'll have a better chance winning the lottery than getting a sunroof installed in a limited production vehicle at the factory.

there is no sun roof for weight saving reasons... I have been on a tour of the BMW plant here in South Africa and was told that a roof prepared for a sun roof is heavier. Then i was shown the frame of a roof prepared for a sun roof and one without preparation and there is definitely more structural reinforcement needed for a sun roof.

Probably due to the giant hole in the roof.

Sorry dude, but this has been mentioned countless times in previous threads.

So to sum it all up, the 1M does not get:
- DCT (auto transmission)
- carbon fiber roof
- moon roof
- convertible version
- more than 3 exterial colors
- a high revving Naturally Aspirated BMW S-engine
- BMW Individual - personal preferences or options

If you must have one of these, go with M3.

Sounds intuitive, yet in the E82 parts list only the roof panel itself is different with the sliding roof option. There are no reinforced parts nor additional parts related to the sliding roof.

The aftermarket availability of OEM like sliding roofs like Webasto's, also suggests that the non sunroof roof construction is capable of housing a equally large sunroof.

Does anyone have in depth experience with E82 roof replacement / aftermarket sunroof install?

The options with increasing level of difficulty:

Webasto 7x0 or 9x0 at ~2k$ installed

or

OEM style part# 41002996132 @$942.05 + selling your soul to a friendly body shop and a not so German BMW dealer (not sure yet if option programming is needed)

or

Only if you've got two right hands and balls of steel: Fuse a large molded PMMA sheet, of your preferred size and color to the cut out roof sheet metal. Next level, if you have a home lathe and milling shop: make it sliding while weatherproof.

go for it!
