Why I don't want an M3 (even if I can't get a 1M allocation...)

Too big, too heavy for my personal taste

How about plotting the 1M on the same graphs?

Nice charts to make your point, which I certainly can't disagree. But to show a more complete picture why don't you add hp/tq figures, cost in today’s dollars and lap times at the 'Ring? I think the E9x M3 is still a very good value (without all the options ) regardless of personal taste. Kind of funny to big and heavy for your personal tastes when you drive a X5.

Yes having the 1M as a frame of reference would be informative as well.

Good point on the X5, but unfortunately that is my wife's car (which I drive with her and the kids on the weekends).... I had been waiting for the 1M to come to get my own first bimmer.

A lot of good point to enrich the graphs, will try to create a revised set with the feedback.

yup too big for me too. it's a kick a@@ car no doubt and I'm not putting it down but a "sports car" to me is small and nimble as well as fast.

heck the 1M is acually pushing it as it is at 3290 lbs if you use my definition

I'm coming out of a Elise SC and friends that's barely a "car". almost a motorcycle! awesome sure but i wants something a bit more substantial.

M3 is the size of a Camry. I miss the last 3 series body style. I like what BMW has done with the 1 series. A return to where the 3 series used to be. I might have gotten a 135i with the M package if the 1M didn't emerge.

Best of all world to me. Can't wait. But I gotta (Oct)

Or if you want to take it to the outer limits, try the Ariel Atom on for size.

You have to understand that this is what the consumer has called for and BMW knows how to deliver.

Perfect post. So thru.

I have had an M3 sold it because of all those aspects. Waiting for the 1M. Pity its a turbo though but the car size is perfect.

Ridiculous. Modern are cars are heavy if you want all the bells and whistles. With its mass the M3 still outperforms all others in its segment. Why not plot HP/Ton or something.

Ayrton91 - What are your alternatives? If you have had the pleasure of driving an original M3 you will see why it still shines in comparison tests with later generation Ms. Lively, nimble, responsive and yes powerful, ( but not outrageously so ). These traits are what make the car an unintimidating joy to drive. Sadly I think the days of naturally aspirated performance cars are numbered. Porsche needs to make a car like the original M3. But then I suppose it wouldn't be a Porsche.

Indeed, it is partly safety requirements and the "bells and whistles" that make modern cars heavy. Personally, I don't want the bells and whistles (which is why I am ordering a base 1M). I don't question that the M3 outperforms others, I just enjoy driving smaller lighter cars.

I can plot HP/Ton and it would probably bring another point, which is how as cars have gotten heavier engines have gotten larger and more powerful and in the process less efficient. I just enjoy a light small sports car that handles well, with the right amount of power and does not break my wallet every time I go to the pump (as I would use it as daily driver). Again it's all a matter of personal taste.

You are right...I should change that. I drive the X5 on the weekends (it's my wife's car). My daily driver is a Focus SVT

I figured it was something like that - just busting your chops.

If you haven't done so, though, you really should put the current-gen M3 through its paces before you pan it. (Although that doesn't do much for the cost / fuel economy concern you brought up.)

Hate to break it to you but the 1M isn't exactly a light sports car. Its ~3300 lbs.

Also the current E9x S65 8 is lighter then the E46 S54 6.

This.

When buying an M3, you were supposedly buying a compact, dynamic , car. Now it feels like you are buying a modernized two door e39 M5.
