Wheel prices in Aus compared to Tirerack
Heya all,
First post here - bought my 135i in Oct last year and absolutely loving it. Found this forum while up in QLD over Christmas with nothing to do but watch the f*ing rain or watch us get slaughtered in the ashes. Been reading and absorbing all the great information floating around here since. Have question to throw out there now. Prolly a silly one . . . Looking at replacing my stock wheels and after seeing the lovely 135i project from WSTO, had by heart set on some Yokohama Advan RZ's. Got some quotes here in australia . . . About $1000 a wheel. Fair enough Was just browsing Tirerack before, looking at wheels suiting the 135 and kinda amazed at the prices. No Advans on there but plenty of nice sets - 4 x wheels for $1200? Serious or am I just missing something really obvious here? Prolly belongs in the wheels forum, but kinda related to Australia as well |

First of all welcome and glad you found the forum to be a helpful resource
I'm not surprised at those prices, with the parity everything in the US is cheap as. Remember though you gotta factor in shipping, and if the overall package is greater than 1000AUD you also have to pay customs and GST. Probably best to split your shipment to avoid that.

Wheels vary GREATLY! Production method (and quality) is generally the major difference among wheels, and you can get 4 wheels here for less than 1200 too if you go to tempe or kingz of bling ozzy tyres or whatever. There are decent options on here too for around the 1-2k mark and hopefully some vendors can jump in and spruik their products.
Just out of interest, what wheels are you looking at on tirerack? Your local quote is right - 18" I assume. Advans from o/seas will still be expensive - don't expect to be able to pick up a set for $1000 even in used condition. |

I got a qoute for Advan RZ in 19" by a seller in melbourne for mid $3000 a while a go, when the Oz dollars were lower. So, in 18", they should be no more than $3000 now? Takes a bit of time to get them from Japan though.

Thanks for the feedback though guys - the Ultraleggera were definitely one of my favourites. Tirerack doesn't ship internationally right? So you all just using one of those 'proxy postal' services to get them sent over? Any recommendations? |

you then simply do an international transfer into tyre rack's account, once its in there they send the bits straight away. I got my tyres from him once the payment was through in 5 days to perth. his username is: Gill@Tirerack.com

Email them on gill@tirerack.com. Outline what you wanted in terms of rim, size, tyre, size, quantity and shipping address. He'll send you back a quote. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Must say, I've dealt with them twice and they've been awesome. Much cheaper than anything here. |

Just need to factor in shipping cost, shipping agent, fees, GST etc, and your $150O wheels quickly become over $2500, and you might be thinking might as well pay a few hundreds more and get the Advan. Speaking from experience, that's all.

Definitely true. Might not be a $1K extra but the charges to do rack up fast.

Gill eh? No probs - will send a mail and see what the quote is. I'll itemize it all out so its clear what the additional charges will be and post em up
Dunno, the Advans were still going to be 3.5-4K - I'll split the shipments like Jeef suggested to avoid some of the import charges. Soon see . . . thanks for the help once again |

I just ordered some tyres from the tirerack and shipping was around $270US. Probably will be more as wheels are heavier. Can't argue with a set of Continental tyres for less than $1000 when they retail here for something like $500 each.
Also regarding wheels, just be aware you get what you pay for. Wheels in China (all the cheaper ones) are not manufactured or tested to any standards. They're basically cheap shit like most things from China. |

$270 is shipping is pretty awesome - the value proposition of buying from the US is very compelling. Will keep an eye out for the dodgey makes - one of the reason I'm avoiding Tempe/Ozzy - full of shit mostly . . . only going with names I know. . .

I've just had some Pirelli Pzeros fitted for the rears. Shipping for them was about $250 to Melbourne, the prices of the tyres themselves were < 50% of the cheapest an AU supplier could quote.
The whole process with Gill was seamless, I had them fitted < 1 week from 1st contact, easy payment and ability to track. I'll be buying this way for the foreseeable future.
