20mm Lowered = 1/2in increase in overall height

Someone want to explain that one for Me?

I can just about understand some increase in overall height because the rear tires are larger in diameter than stock 1 series (but not by 40mm)

Still lower than an M3

Not just the rear tires, both are larger. The fronts are 1" bigger diameter, and the rears are 1.5" bigger diameter, which is only a few mm less than 40.

Agreed:

Stock 135i
Front 215/40R18 629mm Diameter, 314.5mm floor to axle
Rear 245/35R18 629mm Diameter, 314.5 floor to axle

1M Coupe
Front 245/35R19 654mm Diameter, 327mm floor to axle
Rear 265/35R19 668mm Diameter, 334mm floor to axle

So (based on the tyres alone) the 1M is 1/2in higher at the front and 3/4in higher at the rear.

BUT - I've seen a number of writeups from reviewers where they mention that the 1M has been lowered by 20mm compared to the Stock 135i.

Is the talk of the 1M being 20mm lower just bull or are they perhaps refering to having to cut down the height of the M3 suspension to get it to fit under the 1er chassis? If that's the case, I wonder if it has compromised the handling.

Call me old fashioned but, if I hear that a car has been lowered, then I normally expect it to be sitting closer to the floor than before - not higher!

Thanks for that comment. Put a big grin on my face!

LOL - why would you think "lower" meant closer to the ground? You're talking to a salesman - for it to make sense, stand on your head and re-listen!

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.

I wouldnt get caught up on the ride height. Look at a 335 coupe next to an M3 coupe. The M3 coupe is higher as well.

There are a few of ways to look at lowered.

1. Are the wheel wells closer to the tires. In the case of the 1M, I believe they are.

2. Is the roof higher from the ground. I believe the roof is the same height or close to it.

3. Is the center of gravity lowered? Not sure on this one, I'll let the experts chime in.

The axle line of the car is .5 to .75 inches higher due to the taller tires, but the roof is still close to the same height so the car is lowered relative to the axles.

Is the fact there is no sunroof a contributor to this? At what point of the roof do they measure it for height??

According to the US brochure I just got, overall vehicle height of 1///M is 55.9 inches vs. 55.4 for the 135i, hence the net increase of 0.5 inches

Or is the 1M 20mm lowered compared to the original suspension from the M3? Because either the "20mm lowered" statement is just wrong or we're comparing the false cars here (135i vs. 1M).
