Road trip
I'm driving up to Syracuse, NY this weekend from Columbia, SC and will be heading out early so I can get there at the intended time. I'm planning on heading up I-77 and then onto I-81 the rest of the way. I don't want to go into all those major cities while I'm heading up there because of traffic and such. Any advice other than bring a jacket?
I will be taking lots of pics as I'm pretty sure the drive will be very scenic this time of year. 1600+ miles round trip in one weekend.

You will be going through some very nice parts of the country. The question is, can you spare time to get off the freeways of not?

Oh yeah. no doubt there. There are still some interesting roads up that way though. I lived in Ithaca for 3 years, during that time drove to Harrisburg PA every 5-6 weeks. I enjoyed driving north from Harrisburg along the Susquehanna river, then taking US220 up toward Binghamton. For an interstate, I81 north from Harrisburg is pretty nice in it's own right too. If you like micro brewery's and haven't tried Appalachian Brewing Company - two locations, one in a really cool historic building in Harrisburg, one in Gettysburg that is more quaint but still really nice. And Gettysburg has a brand new visitors center that is very, very nice compared to the old one. Any time of year is a good time of year to take a spin through the battlefields.

Unfortunately I'm going up there for the funeral of fallen Soldier that used to be in my unit that died serving his country the day before Veteran's Day.
http://www.cnycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=539797 He was a dear friend to the family. He was like a son to my wife and I. He was just married Sept 4th of this year. I don't know how much I'm going to be heading off the beaten path as I'm limited on time. I really just wanted to know if there is anything in particular to watch out for on the route. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. Sorry for your loss. He certainly did have a lot ahead of him. It's a great thing though, serving our country - lots of admiration for him and you alike.
As you probably know, semis will be a huge pain on 81. I always saw a lot of NY state troopers on 81 just across the PA-NY line for the first 10-15 miles. Also tended to see alot of cops around Harrisburg too. Don't know of any current construction but there always seems to be some on 81 somewhere. All the best, my condolences.

Thanks for the kind words. I am prepared for the state troopers at the borders. I have taken plenty of road trips and that's where they usually hang out. The semi's are always a pain but that's what downshifting is for. I'm going to try and take some pictures along the way as I don't know how long I can stay in the car before I have to get out and stretch the old legs a bit.

Had a good drive from Columbia, SC to Chittenango, NY just outside of Syracuse. Took us roughly about 13.5 hours to get up there. 13 dead deer on the side of the road and one near accident in front of me and we were finally out of the car. I took I-77 to I-81 and then back again.
Total milelage covered......1739 miles Total deer dead on the road.......33 Total packs of cigs........5 Don't speed on I-77 after you get to VA right across the border from NC or just south of Charlotte in Rock Hill, NC.
