M3 engine with Active Autowerke supercharger kit exploded (allgedly)?!?

Just saw this on another forum o_O

http://www.ziptied.com/forums/index.php?topic=34449.0

Quote:
So i have done alot of work to our E92 M3 shop car, and i got a call tonight that it "exploded" while driving down the highway....

Its an 08 M3 with the following mods
full exhaust
lowering springs
active autowerke supercharger kit
rogue short shifter
exhaust cut outs

it only has 25k miles on it
pretty run of the mill stuff, so today i installed high flow cats in place of the straight pipe cat deletes we had, and not even 30 minutes later i got a call saying that there was stuff everywhere and it exploded... *i drive down to check it out and there are pieces of oil pan and what i assume rod all over the high way, as well as all the oil out of the car. *My boss was driving the car, and said after he merged onto the highway he shifted into 3rd gear at about 5k RPM and it just went boom.

now as far as blowing up in this fashion, i do not believe it was mechanical over rev (mis shift) due to the lower end damage. *The oil has been changed religiously with lubro moly oil and OEM filters (actually more often than called for). *The car has had a few quirks, when it was stock it dynoed 20whp less than our old M3, was a dealership demo car, which i feel is part of the issue.

anyway back to the original topic, as far as throwing rods, i was under the impression that this usually only happens due to oil starvation or worn bearings... at 25k it shouldnt be either.. yes it is supercharged running methanol but this would not affect the bottom end correct?

basically i want to know what the hell went wrong, and does anyone have any suggestions on what we should do from here?

thanks ZT sorry i rambled a bit...

Damn. That engine totally blew apart. Hard to know what really caused it. I read the entire thread and it cracks me up that the shop owner actually mentioned not wanting to tear the engine down due to warranty concerns.

It will be very hard to determine the failure at this point. I don't like meth injection personally - another point of potential failure. You can make the car insanely fast without it.

It's not the first supercharged engine to blow and it certainly won't be the last. If it wasn't the tune that caused it, I'd be willing to bet that the engine had problems from the factory. I've seen a lot of FI cars with perfect tunes blow only to find out that they had weak points on the rods, weakened ringlands, etc from the factory.

Good luck to the owner, that's going to be one very pricey fix .

All,

Sorry for taking so long to get to this, I had people calling me regarding this thread and it had me extremely puzzled. Unfortunately the links are no longer active but I had a co-worker look at them in time and he informed me something weird was going on with whatever motor was pictured in the thread... weirdest part was I believe it was posted over a week and a half ago from what I understand.

We were able to speak to the owner who assured us there is a misunderstanding of sorts going on, not sure if that is an old motor or whatever but we actually installed this system on the owners car a few months back at our location and had him drive back home. With that said we will be in contact with them next week but will respect their privacy until then and have everyone updated if need be.

The title of this thread is misleading to say the least but after reading it myself I realize it was more of a question than anything. Thanks again to everyone who called/texted me about this and to FI owners out there regardless of what system you own or are looking to purchase you can rest assured FI for the E92 M3 is fine when done correctly and this incident (not sure if there is even an incident) was not a result of a SC kit.

Best,
