Mossberg 500 - Trunk mount?
Does anyone have a trunk mount for their Mossberg 500? If so, which one do you have? I'm thinking about picking up a 500...

Yea man 300$ for an awesome self defense shotgun.
But if your gonna get it for close range and then keep it in your car your gonna have to get a permit from the sherifs office to make it sawed off. Screw the rack man it doesnt make sense... Get a sawed off 12g prolly the remm and get a conceiled weapons permit and keep that lil' pistol like shotgun under your jackect... At 25 yards with that sawed off whoever messes with ya is gonna be swiss cheese in one shot. |

Are you guys expecting zombie attacks? Is this for self defense or just for transportation? I have my CNC permit (though I never carry) and can't imagine a scenario where that would not be enough firepower. Maybe it's time to move to a better neighborhood?

You can get a 30" overall length shotgun with a 18" barrel which is a title I gun. If you want a shorter shotgun you will have to apply for a $200 tax stamp, send your paperwork into the BATFE and have them process it between 3-10 months after it is submitted. After you get your tax stamp only then are you legally allowed to purchase the SBS from your FFL. Then if you want to move that weapon across state lines you have to request to be able to do so from the BATFE. If it is stolen out of your car? You failed to secure an NFA weapon and at the very least you will not be able to get another one. A shotgun/carbine makes a good home defense weapon, but if you are carrying anything outside of your home for self defense it should be a pistol. Most/all of that was not directed at the OP. edit: There is no reason to have a shotgun in your car for self defense, unless you are trying to avert multiple bear attacks. But why would you get out of the car to go get the shotgun anyway? It is a lot easier to just drive away. Last edited by doogle; 09-12-2010 at 05:46 PM.. |

Am i the only one who thinks the OP is trolling? BTW about the pistol:I tottaly agree with you that if you want it conceiled its best with a pistol. |

I say you get a sawed off shotgun mounted in the grill with a remote trigger in the cockpit. Next time a pack of bears messes with you, they'll be in for a big surprise.

Agreed on all points that a shotgun is not the best defensive choice in your vehicle, certainly if it's in the trunk and you aren't, and furthermore that it actually becomes a theft liability.
But if you really want/need a mount I'd use this one by BigSkyRacks, but I'd put in the cabin (if you really want it in the trunk, you can, I suppose): |

I have a 128i vert and a Mossberg 500. But if I wanted to take the shotgun on a hunt, I would use my SUV. There is not a lot of ground clearance of my vert. Cabelas have mounts that look like they could work in the trunk if the Mossberg model you are considering is not too long for the 1.
I don't feel a need for a gun of any kind for personal protection. If I needed one, I would much rather have a shotgun or rifle than a pistol. But the only gun that can help you is the one you have at the time and it is a lot more practical to carry a pistol. State laws differ widely on where you need to carry a gun in a vehicle and what permits you need. Typically unloaded in the trunk is OK. Loaded in the vehicle typically requires a permit, even if it's in the trunk. Shotguns loaded in the cab will probably inhibit your dating - at least it would with the ladies I know. Jim

Lol at the shotgun in the trunk.
And sometimes you need protection from wandering bears. My grandparents were upstate showing their dogs (2 females and a male Irish wolfhound) The were packing up when a black bear came into the parking lot. My grandma released the hounds and they killed the bear. But be careful my grandpa got sued by the state for hunting a bear out of season without a permit and with an illegal weapon...he got off and we got to keep the bear...Herman is a rug now |

The Mossberg 500 SP stays in the house and the Desert Eagle travels. At least that's the way it used to be. Since I moved to NY I have left the DE with my son back in Georgia until I can figure out the god aweful gun laws in the State of NY.

If you want to pack a shotgun you need a Taurus Judge. It is a handgun that shoots 45 and 410. I think it is the best for home defense using 410 shells since the shot will not travel through walls like a bullet would. It is a little large to pack but it would be good to keep in the car.

You could compromise with this thing.
adding: Oops, I didn't notice IDBMW's post. Actually, I've heard it sucks using 410s. But if you're loading it with .45 ACP, why not just carry a 1911? |

Seriously...you carry your DE with you? What do you use for home defense? a Howitzer?
Honestly if you want my two cents, or even if you don't - get a nice compact Sig Sauer 9mm or 40 cal, load it with some +P+ rounds, lock it in the glove box, and pray you never have to use it. |
