My dct just did the dopest thing ever
When I drove a stick and I wanted to take a 90 degree turn, I would approach the corner driving fast, throw it in nuetrsl, use the brakes to scrub off speed, throw it in second right before the turn, go through the turn in second and accelerate out the other side.
Ok today in the dct: I decided to flip the lever to the left in the m/s setting. I then depressed the sport button. I decided to drive around and NOT use the paddles. That would force the car to shift for me but in the most aggressive setting. Here's what happened. The car doesn't just drop down into second before the turn, it actult fucking goes into first gear inrhe middle of the fucking turn, then second again on the way out. You really don't even feel it. You hear a perfectly matched shift but no jerkiness at all. Needless to say you're coming out that corner faster than anybody in an MT. Maybe some other dct drivers can verify this. |

From your description of how you drive a MT, I can see why you're excited about the DCT. But also, it's not faster "than anybody", it's just faster than you driving a MT. Last edited by RPM90; 09-11-2010 at 12:16 AM.. |

You were in S setting? As in to the left but you didn't touch a paddle to go into M? If so, yea, it does that
The shifts are so perfectly rev matched and it's so smooth that the car's balance won't get upset by shifting mid corner. The animation on BMWusa.com for the M-DCT transmission explains exactly what you just said. Most drivers won't bother downshifting to 1st for a second or two mid corner, they would just stay in 2nd. With the DCT, the shifts are so seamless that you could do that and get tiny bit extra speed at the corner exit.

I didn't mean to cause trouble. I was just amazed that it could shift from 2 to 1 to 2 that seemlessly. It's only in gear 1 for a split second at the apex of the turn. I've been driving manuals 20 Years and i can't do that manually

I dont understand but whatever I dont see what's the use to downshift to 1st gear....it's just to get the car moving.

Mercedes automatics will start in 2nd gear if you leave it in the Comfort setting actually. It won't use 1st at all.
Using 1st "only to get the car moving" is false though. It depends on ratios. I'm in 1st for 50-70% of my autocross runs depending on how tight the course is. A lot of the Corvette/Camaro drivers stay in 1st most of the time too.

With spirited driving / HPDE / Track days / sanctioned SCCA racing, I have never EVER put my car back into 1st gear from a higher gear. Maybe to pull into my development (10mph speed limit )
Why would you? Although I have never done an AutoX. I believe Formula 1 has 1st gear corners though , but we are a long way from F1. hmmmmm, miiipilot
