Rock vs Window

One day after getting my tire replaced at 2800 miles from the lovely roads of Cleveland, my front windshield gets pegged on the Interstate this afternoon from a lovely rock. It's not obstructive or allowing water in, but annoying as hell. I don't have the patience or free time to get it replaced at the moment. I will obviously search this out, but I know some states have a one-time free replacement law for said issue. Anyone know Ohio's stance?

Enjoy.

A simple call to your insurance agent will clarify your coverage. Rocks are so prevalent in Arizona, we have unlimited windshield replacement and repairs.

Sorry about the damage to your car.

Can't say about the laws, but I had a chip recently in my windshield (slightly smaller) and repaired it. There are companies that do repairs typically for cheap, and insurance will often cover it. I did it myself with a $10 kit, and while it didn't make it invisible it made a significant improvement in the chip. Worst case scenario spend an hour and $10 and try to repair it, if it doesn't work you're no worse off than you were before.

I had to have my windshield replaced on my last Acura and it is solely based on your insurance. Even though my Comp deduct was $500. Glass breakage was $250. The company I used had a $100 rebate too. So $150 wasn't too bad with a OEM cost of $800.

Hey Eleven, which part of Cleveland are you from. I'm on the west-side (Fairview Park). I don't see any 135s around. Mainly 128i and 128verts.

I know it's a hassle, but I'd get that looked at sooner rather than later. From the pics it looks like a good bump might cause it to spider. If it can be sealed you might not lose your whole windshield.

I have three of those

They're not spidering or anything, but the windshield and hood seem to be rock magnets

I had one of those a few months ago. Started out just like that but within about 10 miles it was a 10" crack. I say get it replaced. Check your insurance documents for your coverages. I paid $20 out of pocket which was the tip I gave the repair guy.

I had one on my Escape that was fine for about 1.5 years, then I hit a bump just the right way and it spread. Then I've had others that didn't last a week before they spread.

If left long enough, it will spread. It's just a question of when/how it gets stressed in the correct manner (e.g. bump, hard turn, sudden/drastic temp changes, etc..) to get it on it's way.

So I just spoke with my insurance - glad I did. Basically, they will come to me. No deductible, no change in my rates, nada.

Miiipilot, I currently live in Beachwood. This month I'm working at a hospital in Westlake, so you may see me around (Alpine White). I've seen very few 1s since I've been here (late June), which is good imo.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

So I had the repair, and it's kinda meh. About what I expected. I can, perhaps, live with it, but in the end I'm not sure it will fly at lease turn-in in 3 years. Which brings me to my newest question:

Given that they offered me a cost-free total window replacement if I'm in any way unhappy with the repair, I'm curious of any opinions on this route. Obviously, I would request OEM-only for material. Anyone ever had this done, and been unhappy/regretted their decision? High potential for mistakes, leaks, etc?

I've had 2 or 3 over the years. One was done incorrectly, using the wrong seal. It had to be redone. But other than that, it shouldn't be a big deal.

any pics of the repair? Was it mostly a seal in order to prevent spreading or a visual fix as well?

I'll try to get some pics up of the post-repair. I'm assuming 'sealed' a potential spread, but also looks slightly better, too.
