arm rest

Can your hand reach the Shift Knob with your elbow resting on the arm rest?

Yes, easily, but my elbow is not usually on the arm rest if I am shifting. And I do not make a habit of having my hand sitting on the shift knob when I am not getting ready to shift. So I usually do not ride along with my elbow on the rest and my hand on the shifter but it if comfortable enough. It just seems like if the knob is in my hand I should be doing something with it.

I am 6'2" with long arms.

Jim

The only problem I've noticed with the armrest is the squeaking that started about 800 miles (but remedied with 1Z einszett cockpit spray). I'm just 5'8" and like Jim try not to handled the shift knob (MT) unless shifting, otherwise I try to keep both hands on the wheel. It's a difficult habit for me to break, because on my other car, I drive a lot more relaxed, including resting my arm on the armrest and hand on the shift knob (also a MT), but the 135i seems to encourage a more hands-on approach with the wheel.

I had to walk outside to try it, but yes. FWIW if your car is MT, you should not rest your hand on the shift knob.

Uh oh, I think I have a bad habit. Why is resting your hand on the shift knob a bad thing?

bc it wears out the gearbox internals when you do that over the life of the trans. Early trans failure - due to worn syncros.

It is just like those people who sit at a traffic light with the clutch pedal dressed( and trans in gear) while waiting for the T-light to change! That is also bad for the clutch and throwout bearing. NOT to mention the thrust main bearings inside the engine!

I didn't think my arm was that heavy, but ok. Time to change that habit.

Luckily, I don't have the clutch habit.

It's not that it's heavy, but it's subtley moving around the whole time you are driving. A bump here, a pothole there. each time your hand will be pulling/pushing the shifter a little bit. It's not meant to really be moved around when you have the clutch engaged and torque going through the transmission.
