Proper oil for 135/128?
I bought some of this oil the other day... however, no where does it say "Long life" etc on it... is this oil suitable? I have a 2010 model... I've been reading some posts that state the "LL" type oil is the only acceptable oil for BMW? But perhaps the BMW brand oil implies its authorized usage...
Thanks. |

Appears that "long life" is implied when you buy the BMW brand oil. See the following post and check out the attachment:

As that is the oil my dealer has been using in both my E46 and 128i, that is what is required. The manual says to use "BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil", either in 5w30 or 5w40 viscosity. Where did you read "long Life"?

Dealer mentioned it to me, also seen it on some posts here. I am assuming the oil I posted is already "long life" standard, as I am getting from this paragraph: f you need to add oil between oil changes and BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is unavailable, you may top up the oil level with one of the following approved synthetic oils. For information on checking your engine oil level refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual. The oils listed below meet BMW's Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines. If you look at the pdf linked to the post from "Trackrat", it specifically lists the oil shown in the picture as BMW's recommendation. It lists the same part number as is on the pictured bottle of oil. That is the oil I get when I order an oil change kit from a BMW dealer.

The Oil to use is the German Castrol syntec European formula 0W-30.
Thats the oil BMW dealerships should be selling.

I had to top off my oil and used Mobil1 5w30, as I went under the hood to open the oil hole the cap read BMW and Castrol.
I doubt putting 5w30 instead of 0w40 is a cause for concern.

If you are changing your oil around every 5K miles, any good reputable synthetic should be fine. If you are going to run it for 15K miles, then you need the LL type.
