Lease Return Annoyance

So as you all know, part of the deal I did when I got my 135i was to have the dealer buy out the rest of my lease. I just received a letter from BMW Finance saying I owe them $1700 after they inspected my car. They gave me a breakdown of all the inspection points and associated costs. They charged me $200 for a few paint chips, no biggie.

The kicker is they charged me $1500 for tires saying the new ones I put on were the "wrong part". WTF is this? It really pisses me off. Anyone have any experience with this. I am going to be fighting this for a while I think.

Where they non-RFTs?

Thats why I'm taking off my RFT's after 10k KM and store them to return the car with, and I'll buy some GOOD tires in the spring.

This was for my 2004 325xi that never had RFTs.

See, that's the thing. I got the stupid tire insurance and I'm almost CERTAIN they won't help me out if my non-runflats got damaged from potholes or metal/nails on the road. It happened to me in March of this year and they won't help me EVEN THO it was written at the back of the tires claims form. It's total BS.

The lease return information is very specific about tyres. They have to be exactly the same size that was fitted originally, same type (ie summer or all-season, depending on what was fitted) and have the "star" symbol on the sidewall, signifying a BMW approved tyre.

Don't forget the minimum tread depth of 3/32nds I think.

I bought the tires off of a local 1addicts member who switched them up for stickier tires and am holding them for the end of my lease just to avoid what happened to the OP.

Damn straight, it can also pay for a few of the mods I want. This car is my 3rd BMW, I am a loyal customer so I am going to try and pursue that as an arguement.

Hell ya.. and honestly paint chips.. are you kidding me.. you should tell them to drive 3-4 years of any car and expect no chips.. and if anything take back those tires and sell them off and try to find some used ones on some forums and give it back to them...

My dad has been leasing cars for 15 years, and I have never heard of anything for paint chips. Also, for tire-return they only cared about tread depth...Maybe this is only with BMW?

Yeah, I can't believe the bill for paint chips! Unless you have chips that aren't related to regular driving (someone took a hammer to your paint), tell them it's ludicrous that paint chips aren't included under normal wear and tear. Never heard of anyone paying $200 less for a used car because it has some paint chips on it.

Tell them you're going to buy an Audi and see what they say.

I've heard with the recent issues in the car industry that they are getting allot tougher on the 'wear & tear' I'm sure they'll be some fights in the near future about it. Basically there passing the buck.

Agreed. That's crazy. Before I had my 125i, I leased a Mazda 3 and when I returned it, one of the most experienced lease checker-outer guys (it's all outsourced now) came and gave me an excellent score, and didn't charge me a thing, even though I had a few paint dings.

When my Porsche came off lease it was 3 years old with the original Michelin Pilots on there.....I was absolutely holding my breath as I really didn't want to pony up $350 + each for new ones of those. Thankfully it passed, and the rest of the car was prestine anyway.

When I leased my wife's 128i, I purchased that BMW Excess Wear & Use Protection.

BMW Excess Wear & Use Protection is by far, the smartest package available for lessees. It's designed to protect you against unexpected lease end costs. Ford and Chrysler have had these types of packages available for years and finally BMW has gotten on board with it! You're basically protecting yourself from lease end costs due to excessive wear and tear on your vehicle. Bald tires, scuffed rims, stained/damaged upholstery, door dings, stone chips, etc...all covered with this package. You are entitled to claim up to $7500, with a per item limit of $1000 each item. For example, say all your tires need to be replaced, that's considered 4 items, therefore you'd be covered up to $1000 for each tire. The best part about this protection is that your security deposit ($650) will be WAIVED if you add the Excess Use & Wear Protection. It's just $799 to add peace of mind!

I was told that if my tires are worn out, I am covered for each tire.

My question now is, if I return the car w/o the original tires, do you think my package will cover this? Ie. what if I return the car with winter tires on, that I purchased from an outside non-BMW retailer?

I think you have to have the original tire model that was on the car to have this covered but someone correct me if I am wrong.

The wording of the lease return conditions for paint chips does allow for paint chips of a certan size and only so many per body panel as it's normal wear and tear. If you have 4 on a single door that are big they are probably going to ding you.

But, since you are a continuing customer there is always some negotiating you can do.
