drove 2009 civic si....
my friend recently bought si,
i test drove it and it had only 2000KM, the shifting was smooth like butter, click click..... i wonder if the cdv will make our car shifting like that..... |

My friend has an 09 Si, and I drive it all the time.
No, our gearboxes will never feel like that. They come stock with a Short Throw Shifter, and the action, while quite precise, is very metallic and mechanical. Our gearbox is very different...it has much more soul. While it could benefit from shorter shifts, I don't want it to feel like a Honda gearbox. And the CDV mod won't affect gearbox feel, just clutch feel. |

I think the BMW Performance SSK narrows the difference in shifter feel.
Hondas have always had very precise and smooth-short throwing shifters.

I've not driven a car with a better shifter feel than the S2000... I know this is somewhat a matter of opinion, but I challenge someone to tell me one better.

Agreed , my old S2000 had a fantastic gear box ... Its the one thing I wish I had in the 135i.. Everything else in our 135i's are IMO

cvd does seem to affect shift feel for me, it's slowing the clutch throw, and sometimes I can feel it not wanting to pull out of gear, this would only happen if it was still partially engaged and only does it when I'm driving with purpose (most of the time)

I must agree with you fellas. MY04 still has the best shifter out of any car I've ever driven as well. What is this? A Honda forum? Sheesh. JK. ;-)

There's pretty much universal acclaim for Honda's masterful manuals. My 85 CRXsi was sweetest thing ever - effortless.

Did have a 07 335i then save gas got rid of it and bought a 08 Civic Si. Car is nice but it was SLOW, I floor it and other car still beat me like Atlima... I keep telling myself is ok... but even little kids with older civic, Mazda 3 try to race me and rev next to me at the light. I am tired of the rice and sold it taking $6k loss and ordered a 135i for next month ED. It seems like no one try to race you when you are in BMW and I like it that way...

the throw is long in the bmw though my foot must be my problem, I don't notice slow engagement when I let off the clutch I only notice slow disengagement, my foot will be on the floor and the clutch is still engaged and it does not want to let go of the gear it's in. Drive by wire is also irritating, I'll slide my foot off the throttle pedal and it'll take a noticeable moment to cut power, I suppose this is the drive by wire + the time it takes to bypass boost, if I'm really trying to shift fast the combination of power still on + clutch not disengaged is irritating when I bought my 135i I had to slow down my shifting on purpose, because it did not want to come out of gear, my R56 or M3 both did not have this problem.

Shifters that have direct linkages to the shift forks generally have the best feel. FWD cars often use 'cables', as opposed to 'rods' and it's harder to get good feel (and the same goes for mid-engined and rear-engined cars).

I did some experimenting today on the way to work, I think my initial shifting problems were break in related, now i can shift as fast as I want
but, there is lag when I release the gas pedal, if I shift really fast, the rpm's are still rising when I'm putting it in the next gear, every shift is a half power shift, my foot is not on the gas, but the rpm's go up when I push in the clutch and do not rev match. I am not a fan of drive by wire, give me back a real throttle cable

+1 on the S2000. I got spoiled with that car's shifter. Sounds like we have a number of ex-S2000 owners here... I guess great minds think alike!
