Car shakes when braking

Was driving on some back roads and noticed really bad shaking in the steering wheel when I brake. I was slowing down pretty hard from high speeds and now I notice shaking whenever I brake, albeit pretty subtle. I've never tracked my car and don't drive all that overly aggressive.

My car only has 8k miles so I can't imagine I would need new rotors. I have an appt to get it check out. Anyone have any idea what else it could be and If i'm gonna have to pay out of pocket?

rotors should be covered for the first 4 years/50K miles.

Hey man,
After my first track day, I had the same "problem" you are experiencing. Do not worry since in about 2 weeks, it will go away. The vibration is caused by break pad material attached to the rotors. After a few hot laps, the temperature on the stock pads will almost melt them and if you are not careful to let your brakes cool off, you might encounter worst problems. I cant imagine you heated up your brakes so much on the streets, but try not to brake so much when stopping after reaching high speeds...it is actually better to do hard , consecutive brakes than braking for prolonged periods since this will even bring more heat to the breaks.

Just a guess, but this sounds like a rotor issue that is typically caused by applying the emergency brake while the brakes are hot (e.g., complete a track session then apply emergency brake while parking). This is a common issue for people that track their cars. If you don't track your car but you do drive/brake hard, this can happen to you as well.

+1, this is probably what it is.

If you want to get them feeling better sooner, stop a few times hard from a high speed to wear off the pad material thats transferred to the rotors.

Nope, doesn't work with the oem pads. If you want to avoid those problems in the future:

1) brake properly (short and hard)

2) buy the race pads from BMW. they are excellent but you have to get used to some squeaking...

The parking (emergency) brake system uses a separate drum brake inside the rear rotors on the E9X M3's. The rear brake pads are not applied when using the parking brake. Using the parking brake when the rotors are hot will not be a problem with the M3.

Some other types of vehicles do use the rear brake pads for the parking brake.

I noticed a vibration too when I braked from high speeds. That was a few months ago. It seems to have gone away by itself since then.

What a great/logical idea. I would still feel weird using the emergency brake after a session.

Yes it does, after 4 days of tracking it stayed consistant, I did a few hard stops in succession from around 80 to zero, problem solved. For aggressive track days, I agree on better track pads. Now if you warped your rotors, this technique won't work. The vibration will return quickly.

I agree that it's probably pad transfer. It took 3 weeks of street driving for it to disappear after a track weekend, but I don't use my brakes real hard in my normal day to day driving.

Thanks everyone!! Turns out it was from driving on a bent rim, which I had replaced over a month ago. This warped the rotor, which had to be replaced, as well as a wheel hub.

Dont see how the bent rim would warp the rotor? What a crazy answer they gave you, but whatever the case glad your car is fixed.

I went for one track day, and had the same experience. Sent the car to the dealer, and they found that the offside disc has actually warped. They replaced both sides together with new pads.

They were kind of speculating. They never actually discussed it with me. I figured it made sense.
