Service Count

I have read alot of good stuff on here about oil changes and not-setting indicator if it was done by time.

1) I have had 3 oil changes by time since I only drive 4,000 miles/yr. Are there some other maintenance issues tied to oil changes, that I am missing?

2) I have never noticed these i-drive services counting down, but the BMW service guy assures me it is. I got my oil changed two weeks ago and it still says 15,000 miles. I called and he said that was normal and it may take a few days to start counting down. I am pretty sure my service indicator has never counted down because every one of them is still at "_,000 " rather than being odd numbers. Maybe the system on counts in 1,000's?
