Thumbs up What performance tires to replace runflats?

When my runflats are bald, what performance tires would you suggest for a weekend driver with some weekday work driving?

Anything out there right now that seem to be the definitive runflat replacement?

anything Z-rated will do?

What's your preference?

As of now, I'll be opting for the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s or Pirelli PZeros in 225/40 up front and 255/35 in back. The PS2s are a tad lighter 21 vs 23 front and 24 vs 25 back, but the PZeros seem to handle better with a tad more traction.

I've heard Dunlop Star Specs are a force to be reckoned with!

Haven't heard of those before now, but they are quite a bit on the heavy side, but cheap and tirerack likes them. Have to keep them in mind.

How are your tires wearing? I have 4000 miles with very little wear. Do they last at least 25k?

Plan on the rears wearing about twice as fast as the fronts as this seems to be the norm for RWD BMWs.
After 11,000 miles, I project about 23,000 from the rears and 50,000 for the fronts on my SP 128i - assuming the tires are changed out with 3/32" tread remaining.
Like they say, YMMV!

Re RFT replacements, I had good performance from the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires mounted on my Z4 and the price was quite reasonable.

I've planning on getting Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R although I don't have any experience with them. Anyone used them before?

I was gonna open up a thread regarding this but saw ur post which is kinda the same.

Whats the most common replacement?

For the E60 M5, the most common replacement is the M PS2's. I think they are the best and thats what im going for.

But, is it the best for the 135? are they loud? or will they be silent/fine?

I wonder if the PS2 ZP tires are any good? They are the new run flats based on the PS2. Very few sizes available right now.

The new 7-series has the new fourth gen run-flats on it. Look for any road tests and see what they have to say. :iono:

i have 4 215/45/17 's on my scion tc right now... it was a huge upgrade over the bridge stone potenza's (re92 is the model number). in comparison, my car could very well have been on ice skates; the traction seemed little to non at times.

Another thing that i noticed is that which the bridge stones i found myself going back and front to patch/plug my tires a lot. Ive been driving on the perilli's for 9 months now and i haven't gotten not one flat and my tire pressure is always even and does not fluctuate like my last set ( i use to have to put air in those things every 2 weeks or so.)

All in all, i love my perilli's. i can't wait to run down those horrible run flat tires when i get my car. I was thinking about getting 225/40/18 in the front and 255/35/18 in the back. im kinda worried about not having a spare though. oh and changing to bigger tires will screw up the speedo reading some...

It might screw it up some, but it is already off, so just hook up the GPS and see what it says. Stock it's off by 3 mph @ 80, but with my 17x8s with 245/45 drag radials, it was dead on at 80. I think I'm leaning toward to Pirelli's though. Thanks for the review.

I've had great experience with General Tire's Exlaim UHP's

and now many tire places are catching on and offering them with wheel packages

they are IMO one of the better tires for the money, along with Nexan N-3000 and NanKang's NS-II's

I loved the PS2s I had on my Audi and will likely stick with them.

I just saw that TireRack has the new Extreme Summer Performance tire from Kumho, the Ecsta XS, which is the replacement for the aging Ecsta MX. There is not much in the way of tests or reviews, but the good news is that it is available in 245x35-18. I'm interested to hear how it compares to the Dunlop Direzza Z-1 Star Spec in performance.

For what it is worth I have Yokohama Advan Sports in 255 rear and 225 front. They are reasonable good and excellent in the wet. However dry traction could be a little higher..

If I had my money again I would go PS2's or the New P Zero's..

I've got 8300 miles so far and the rear has maybe 1/16" tread left with maybe 3/16 on the front. I expect to get to 9000 before I have belts showing on the rear and maybe 12000 on the front. I've already got some all season tires waiting in the garage for the winter season.

I like those new Kumhos a lot, but there's nothing for the fronts. Will the rears fit on the front without rubbing or looking too stupid? If so, I wouldn't mind a second set of the wider rears and run same size all around so I can rotate and get a little more grip up front. I'd like that a ton.
