Winter in the air...

I was just wondering if any of you have pulled the trigger yet on a winter wheel/tire set up? If you have....what did you go with?

Sticking with the stock 18" wheels with 225/40 snows. Will buy 19" CSLs in the spring. Will get a donut/jack for a spare.

I'm being told that the 225/40's will fit and based on this I'm going with the Pirelli Sotozero's. It would be nice to understand potential downsides to running tires on the 18" OEM wheels that were not the original tire sizes (e.g. will the speedo be off?).

Nope, bought the BMW mobility kit that has an electric air pump and goo that goes into the tire to patch it temporarily so you can get to a tire shop.

I believe TireRack sells a Continental version as well.

........or just use the Free BMW Road Side Assistants to tow your car. Otherwise what else are you going to ever use it for, if your running RFT's.

on that note. I'm running 17" KM11's with Blizzak WS-60's, from TireRack

I understand your point but I don't think I'll run RFT during winter. Thing is, I think too much about this bad dream: A flat tire after a ski day on a sunday night on the way home. Yes road side assistance will tow the car but where ? I'd rather seal the tire myself and go at the dealer the next day.

Ha the speedo is already off by 2 or 3 mph, 75 mph is really 72 in my car. Maybe bigger tires will fix it!

What about tire pressure sensors are you guys buying sensors for the winters? If you do go with the sensors will they get mucked up if you ever use the goo?

ethermal, look at the stickies in this forum. Only US cars use TPMS so we don't have to worry about the goo gunking them up.

If you use the goo, I think you need to get a new tire anyways, which means you are going to have to get new pressure sensors.

All in, $1429 (incl taxes, customs, shipping, broker fees).
And they arrived today by UPS, no surprises.
Let it snow!

I was thinking of putting Blizzaks on the stock 18 sport package wheels.... Hoping i'm not alone, cause I want to buy CSL reps for spring, but not have to buy a 3rd set of rims

Question

Gill, can you comment on whether any new info from BMW has come out regarding recommended winter tire sizes for the 135i Coupe? The dealers are saying they will offer a winter tire/wheel package sometime starting in mid-September.

according to this site, adding bigger tires will actually get you a slower reading then the speed you are actually doing. The difference is 0.8 mph when you plug in 245/35/18 an 255/35/18.

My guess is that it will even out somewhere

oh... and im not sure of it but... changing the front tires will give the same affect. anyone know which tires the speedo is reading from?
