135i/128i Redlines?

I could have posted this in one of the technical subforums, but those are each specific to their respective engines. My question concerns both.

Where do these two engines redline? I can't find anything. Being a former Honda guy, this is important to me and may influence my final decision, being 128i versus 135i.

Alright, good to know. I was hoping for something a teensy bit higher than that, but that works.

the 128i and 135i both have a 7,000 rpm redline.

from my quick 1 day loaner experience, I found that my 135i reved up MUCH faster than the 128 loaner I received.

was your loaner an automatic? because i think automatics start in second gear unless they're in DS or manual mode. it's supposed to help on gas or something.

is this true? if it is, one more reason to let the driver do the thinking, not the steptronic computer....

In actuality - even though the 135i N54 engine redlines at 7K, there's no real need to rev it that high. The torque curve is essentially flat from 1400 to 5K - reving beyond 6500 produces no additional power (in fact the engine falls flat on its face above 6500).

This engine is completely different than anything you've dealt with from Honda. It has a better torque curve than most V8s. You don't have to rev the snot out of it to get it to make power.

Two lane roads and this engine were made for each other - passing is a snap (and safer subsequently).

Above and beyond that - even though the N54 Inline 6 utilizes seven main bearings - it still is a long crankshaft and will not rev as high as a well built I4 will (theoretically).

well my dad has a porsche cayenne s and when it is in normal automatic mode it starts in second gear. and i also notice that if i manually put my 1 in first it revs MUCH faster than when i'm driving along in normal automatic, so i assume it does start in second. if you want to start in 1st all you have to do is click it down one, and it'll eventually switch back to automatic for you if that's how you want it to be, or click the stick to the left which can override the automatic completely and just use the paddles to shift manually.
