Motor Trend 2009-10 New Car Buyer's Guide...
in the new issue states that the 2009 135i will be available only as a manual. I wonder how accurate that is?

I think that would be a smart thing to do....i bet most automatic buyers stick to the 128i, for touring. The 135i is more performance oriented, and thus more popular in the stick.
But, who knows if the info is even true?? |

They definitely won't make the 135i stick only - BMW has never offered non-M cars as of late in just one transmission and there will always be more AT buyers than MT.

That sounds absolutely absurd.

In terms of performance, it depends on what specific part of it you mean, because as far as acceleration is concerned, the auto is quicker  In terms of performance driver appeal and involvement/control, that's each to his own - most here prefer the manual for that  Along with what 1nnabe has stated, auto trans are nearly always the bigger sold numbers on most car types/brands not just the 135i... 135i manuals may be the more numerous on this forum, but I doubt that's the overall trend, would be interesting to get some numbers from BMW. The BMW dealer I've been dealing with has the step as the far bigger seller overall for the 1er... Unless BMW want to lose sales or volumes, I highly doubt they'll delete the auto trans option. An interesting thing that comes to mind though, is the fact that the 6sp step will be replaced by the 7sp DCT in the 335i - I wonder if this has any bearing or influence on the 135i ?? Maybe the 6sp step is being replaced across the BMW range with the 7sp DCT and there may be a shortage of supply initially, causing a period of manual only availability to other models ?? just speculating of course  I'm kinda hoping (as I'm sure many others are) that the 7sp DCT does indeed find its way into the 135i :w00t: |

All the 135i's that are in stock at my local dealerships seem to be auto's. somebody must be buying them, because there are always new ones in stock. I can't see BMW turning away this business on a transmission/engine combination that has already gone through all the required US gov't testing.

I didn't get it in the picture, but apparently the 0-60 time got slower as well. (4.7s, June 2008; 5.1 in the article)

IF, IF, IF there was any truth to that statement, which I highly doubt, it could be to push the steptronic buyer into the 128i or a 3-Series.
But, I still think it is absolutely absurd, and makes no sense whatsoever.

Geez folks - it's Motortrend that's saying that. (Heck after what we went through with BMW's proofreading last year it might as well have been BMW saying that. ; -)

Sounds like things get lost in the translation, or even BEFORE the translation, huh?...

Sloppy editting. If that was true they would/should make a big deal out of it given what an usual move it would be by BMW. Based on their closing remark, the whole thing sounds like it was written in about 60 seconds by someone who had sort of read about the car and needed to write 37 other summaries by 5 o'clock.

Isn't there a report that the new 3 series is going to be equipped with the DCT like the m3 has? Wouldn't it make sense that it could also go into the 1 at a later time?

I have been trying to find a stick 1 on the lot with just the sports package in Los Angeles. I went down to Santa Monica BMW and asked why they don't have a stick and the CA told me they can't sell them so they only stock automatics. Whoever wrote that for Motor Trend must be a 1 addict member with a 135i stick messing with all the 128 vert owners.
