Just had a scare.
Comfort access almost gave me an heartattack. I parked my 135i on side of the street to let my friend out and I got out to get his jacket from the trunk. I causally closed the door with the engine left running. As I pulled the door handle to get back in the door locked and I started to panic. Touched the door handle and the car wouldn't unlock. Now I am really panicking.
Luckily I felt my pocket and my keys were in there and was able to unlock the door with the remote.

wow that's kinda weird.. and quite scary... i guess you can't lock yourself as we have all found out... but I am more interested in WHY the car locked if you touched the area that unlocks (which is the area you touch to open) and, moreover, WHY it would NOT unlock!
sounds to me like a car with sense of humour...

I think what happened is my thumb might have touched the groove first before hitting the handle, locking the door. But I don't understand why it wouldn't unlock.

I was showing the CA feature to a coworker when my car first came in and the trunk gladly locked the keys in - thankfully I made sure to fold down the rear seats "just in case" before hand. |

For me, CA does two things;
1) most importantly, keeps the key/FOB in my pocket at all times 2) makes firing-up the car a total kick; strap-in, hit the start-button. Easy-button?

When I was in high school a friend of mine locked himself out of his car while it was still running. We tried to jimmy it open with a coat hanger one of the other students gave us, but we couldn't get it so we gave up and went to class. By the time lunch rolled around it had run out of gas and stopped running. Although that was a total beater that he paid like $300 for so he didn't give a crap about it. I'd have been a lot more worried about doing that with a $40K BMW.

I have Comfort Access, and it refused to open up one time. I know it was responding to my touch 'cause I could hear it click. But instead of unlocking, every time I would touch it, it would try to repeatedly lock, even though it was already locked.
I used the remote, and it unlocked fine. It had to be some sort of a glitch.

Add this to weird CA glitch, when the door is already unlocked and you pull the door open it would sometime go off like a machine gun. Ra ta ta ta ta ta

Wooo, I've got to try that with her car How often does it happen, you surmise? For me, I never get out of the car with keys inside without opening the drivers window first

A couple of times mine has got confused, I have unlocked my drivers door and both unlock (as per settings) then I move to passenger door to open it for my passenger (with fob in pocket), as I open the door the mechanism unlocks again as the door swings open. It sounds like a bag of bolts rattling around in the door.?:iono: Not the sound you want coming from your door if your trying to show off your quality new car to somebody.
edit. same as above, I missed the last 2 posts sorry.

I had that same noise several times until I realized it was caused by my thumb slightly touching the lock grooves on the handle at the same time I opened the door. Now that I figured that out, it's been perfect for the past 5000+ miles.

oh wow, so many different experiences...
I just wanted to add to what surname said, it is almost impossible to lock yourself out with CA because most of our FOBs never leave our pocket. I LOVE it. and it throws mortals off every time. even people who see me after I already got in the car, or who assume that I had unlocked it with the FOB remotely and that's how I got in so easily, are very surprised when they see the swift compound motion of getting on the seat, pushing the button (another space age feature), and strapping in... no ignition/key element at all. Somehow it makes me feel like a racing driver (though it does NOT reflect on my speed thereafter).

I've had this happen to me a couple of times. Once the car locks, there's a delay of a couple of seconds before you can unlock it. If you try to unlock it right away, it resets the delay and you have to wait again. If it happens again, (this sounds like something you'd do for a kid) step back and count to 5, and then try it again and see if it works. Just an FYI, I played around with CA and tried to lock the keys in the car and couldn't do it. I put them in the side pockets of the doors thinking that might trick it, and it didn't. The system is a little tempermental sometimes, but it does seem to be pretty safe. |

I believe what Jeremy has described is actually in the manual.
Still I never shut the door if I get out of the car with the engine running, which is something I rarely do since shutting it off and starting it again is so quick. |
