DCT in 1-Series by 2010?
"The dual-clutch transmission is the same unit fitted on the V8-powered M3, but some changes to the software are planned to better suit the turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six powerplant. There's no word on when the DCT gearbox will be available on U.S. shores and we don't know what kind of premium the seven-speed tranny will carry, but a DCT-equipped M3 commands an additional $2,700 over the six-speed manual, so expect a similar price when the revised 335i goes on sale, likely later this year."
I'd be real interested to see the performance stats on that. Step tranny is still slush. This DCT is a whole new ballgame. |

If it does come to the 1 I'll let my lease expire in 3 years and get one with DCT.

So they 2009 335i coupe will offer a DCT trans? $2700 is about $1300 more than the normal step auto. Maybe I will buy a stripped 2009 335i coupe with sport package, 19" wheels and the DCT trans, sweet option.

Since the 1 series design has been out since 2004 in Europe, when will BMW redesign it? Maybe 2010 will be all new, less bulldog front, no potbelly, and mean low headlights. I am now worried about getting a 2009 135i.

If they do the design changes you mention it wouldn't be a 1, it would be the existing 3.

No, I'm not syaing that it won't be changed as I do not know. I was just commenting that the design changes you want seem to morph the 1 series into what the existing 3 series already looks like.

Coupe - definite YES.
http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2008/07...get-m3s-7.html Parallel to the market launch of the facelifted 3 Series sedan and touring models, BMW announced the availability of its new 7-speed semi-automatic gearbox with double-clutch for the 335i Coupe and 335i Convertible models. Named DKG, the new double-clutch transmission was introduced for the first time on the M3 Sedan. It offers the driver the choice of controlling the gearbox changes through a shift lever on the centere console or via paddles on the steering wheel. Equipped with this gearbox, the 335i Coupe with the 306Hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.4 sec or 0.1 sec faster than the model fitted with the 6-speed manual transmission and 0.3 seconds faster than the 335i Coupe with the previously available 6-speed automatic. -Continued Furthermore, the double-clutch gearbox helps drop consumption in both the 335i Coupe and Cabriolet by up to 5% compared to the equivalent models with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. In particular, the 335i Coupe & Convertible models with the DKG achieve an average fuel consumption in the combined EU test cycle of 8.8lt /100km (26.7 mpg) and 9.1lt/100km (25.9 mpg) respectively. I would love to pick up 135, but I want: new iDrive, aka 2009 E90 Sedan and this new transmission, as in 2009 335i Coupe.. it gets better milage too. |

You don't seem too enamored with the 1. Are you sure you're at the right party?

I think the 1 series is getting the new iDrive for MY2009. And if the 335i coupe is getting the DCT, I wouldn't be surprised if the 135i gets it as well. It's the same engine so the only issue is business related.

I hope the DCT comes to the 1 series before I'm ready to buy my next one in 3-4 years. Before deciding on the 135i I was on a waiting list for an Evo X with a DCT. Based on everything I read it had the speed of a manual, the convenience of an auto and was faster, 0-60 and around a track, then both.

All those design changes/improvements and the DCT featured on a 135i would be absolutely fantastic...I won't be ordering until at least mid 2009 (here in Aust. we have no choice anyway, but to wait until then, if you make a customised order) but if I get wind of the above happening, I'm happy to wait til 2010  |

Im excited (and pissed) about the 0.9% interest. Im suspicious of the DKG box.
The VAG DSG box still has kinks that need to be worked out (and it has been around since 03-04). Modulation of the clutches becomes difficult as the floaters and fluid heat. It leads to harsh engagement and lurching if the car is driven to the limit. You likely wont see it on a test-drive. Forget SSTT and Vishnu if you go down this road as 135 stock already has superior peak 'twist' to the m3. Also (and i dont know the specifics here) make sure that when you put the stick to manual, the box will not shift on its own. Volkswagens and Audis will shift for you as you approach redline (even when in manual) and its really annoying. The evo10 sst box has a 'true' manual mode where it wont shift unless told to shift. Its fun as hell until it breaks and you find out that there is only one tech in the whole shop that can work on your car...Long stay in the infirmary Maybe they got it right...who knows? Looks great on paper but why early adopt? |

Aren't the turbos on the 135i manufactured by Mitsubishi? If so then that means BMW has an existing relationship with them and could possibly license the same DCT they use in the Evo X. Based on everything I read about the Mitsubishi SST-DCT it is far and away the most advanced DCT ever produced. A 135i with the Mitsubishi SST-DTC would be an absolutely awesome meld of technology from both the Germans and the Japanese and would be something very high on my list for my next car.

Therefore it should easily handle the torque output of both a stock and modded (to a certain point) N54  The Mitsu SST equipped Evos had the same story until not so long ago, they were not being touched by some tuners, because they didn't have sufficient knowledge on it yet, with regards to power handling limits etc. !!! But now, Japanese tuners (HKS Kansai) have a modded SST equipped Evo 10 putting out big power and torque numbers, so they've figured out exactly what the SST can handle and how to get it which requires ecu re-programing, but it's more than people initially thought possible... As with all manner of tuning it takes some time to sort out, from the above info, I'm confident the BMW 7spd DCT will be just fine behind an N54 with moderate power increases  |
