Rattling noise on ignition

When I start or stop the engine, I hear an audible rattling sound. It sounds metallic and tinny and it only lasts a second at most right when I start/stop the car, but I wanted to make sure that it's nothing to worry about. Anyone else hear this sound from their 1?

I think it is the little metal flap that opens up in your left exhaust pipe.

wild guess

That was my first guess. Maybe I should prop it open with something and try starting the car to see if the noise goes away.

I've been meaning to do the golf tee mod anyway, so I'll definitely try this first. Thanks.

I don't notice it on start up but I do notice a rattle/rumble of the engine when I shut it off.

there are 2 different noises. one is the metallic noise which can be heard on startup and also when in 2nd gear you pass 1,000 rpm (either going up or down) and also in 3rd gear at various rpms. this noise is not present in 1st. for a long time i thought this was the metal flap. But now I am beginning to think it may have to do with the wastegate because many people with 335's report hearing lots of metal noise after meing updated to 29.2. I had originally assumed my car was pre 29.2, but now I am not sure. When I picked up in April, they may have updated the software.

The second noise, is the rattle. This can be heard upon shut down and also when pressing the clutch in 1st gear. This noise can be avoided on shutdown by holding the clutch. this noise is normal and my g35 had the same thing.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread. I get the same sound on shutdown.. but it's also present now in first gear when starting off. It has become more prevalent lately. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a little worried this is tied to the throwout bearing.

I have the same noise in my 1. I have had it since day 1, and the demo i drove at the dealer did too. When you shut off the car without pressing the clutch there is a rattle (of sorts). If the clutch is pressed, it is not there.

This is normal. It is in all 1's, if you havnt heard it, listen harder.. ..

Nothing wrong with the car!

My dealer told me the noise was the wastegates (at least the noise you hear at startup).

Relating to a rattle on start up or shut off, leave your car in first gear when you turn the car off. It should eliminate the noise.

Regardless of what the sound is (i've only noticed it on start-up) I think its ridiculous that a $40k+ car makes a sound like this. I'm constantly embarrassed by it on start-up and quite tired of explaining what it is to new passengers in the car....

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my car, but you can't tell me that after putting men on the moon humanity as a whole (let alone german engineers) can't find out a way to open waste-gates/exhaust valves silently.

I have the metallic clinging sound at startup too. Strange thing is, this was never heard until after my software was recently updated to the latest version (v34). It happens only occasionally, but when it does, it makes me lift an eyebrow. My car has the performance exhaust and thus does not have the muffler flap. (This is not to be confused with the rattle that occurs when starting up and shutting down the engine without the clutch depressed.) Curious if this is normal.

If you hold the brake when you start it up, you won't get the rattle.
I drive manual.
