Anybody want to convert theirs to No Sunroof?

Anybody in SoCal (I guess it could be anywhere in the US) wished their 1 series did not have the sunroof? We were going to convert ours (I even have the non-sunroof headliner), but BMW Club Racing Rules wouldn't allow it for stock class.

would you be allowed to buy the car in Canada and ship it to the US? The currency would be against you of course, but you would be able to get a OEM car this way.

I never use my current sun roof. It's just too noisy. I wish I could have saved a few hundred bucks by deleting it.

Depends on the conversion. Is it going to be a one piece CF roof like the M3 or is it more like replacing the glass and take out the motor? I would prefer the entire roof and a new roof lining.

If I opt to delete my sunroof I'd wait for an entire roof. That way it would be seemless. If you can't see through the sunroof, I see no reason to have the odd rectangle on the roof.

That's what we would have done - basically remove the whole sunroof, headliner and sunroof roof skin and replace with metal roof skin, hardtop roof bow (integrated into the roof skin on sunroof model) and new headliner. We essentially did the same thing on our M3 race car, but without doing the headliner.

It's a bit of work:
- remove windshield and rear window
- remove sunroof and headliner
- drill out all the welds holding on the sunroof top
- pry, rip off the sunroof top (it will not be salvagable)
- pre-paint the new hardtop roof skin and roof bow
- weld in the hardtop roof bow
- install hardtop on car (can be bonded on)
- install new headliner
- re-install windshield and rear window

I even had SSF find the part numbers for me (I only got the headliner so far because we changed how we were going to go about deleting the sunroof from the method below - which we ended up not doing either). So I'll find the e-mails and list those.

Now, if you went with whole CF roof, you could delete the painting step above (leave the roof bow in primer black)

Most people want to remove it for the weight savings. Since the weight is at such a high point in the car, it's worse. I had a sunroof in my last car, and it only got opened once a month probably. The problem with Florida is it rains every damn day lol

This isn't a mod I would do until my car is out of warranty though. If I even do it, I'd have to go with CF painted to match the car.

I ordered my 325 coupe without a sunroof to save money. Previous to that I had a GTI-VR6 with the sunroof standard.
I have gotten used to not having one, but I'm glad to have one now. In PA we have all four seasons and a nice fall day with the roof open is nice.

Maybe we should have a poll on this.
Who would not want the sunroof...

I like sunroof, because it makes the car brighter inside.

Me neither. Open it up after the car's been parked in the sun and the hot air just whooshes up and out of there. As for noise, I like hearing the engine better.

That would be relly cool, just a bit concerned about my safety. If it was dry carbon I would consider.

Even if you used a BMW metal hardtop roof skin?

I live in Northeast-Central Florida, and use the moonroof everyday. The first real cold front of the year(usually early November) should be a state holiday. I crank it open, open my driver's side window and run the heat if it gets too cold. I'm not a convertible type person, so this is the next best thing...Wouldn't want to see BMW get rid of it, ever...........

no sr?

Personally, I kick myself every beautiful sunny day for not buying a car with a sunroof, so I was thrilled to find the 1 has a sunroof STANDARD. I'll never buy another car without one. For those who don't want the sunroof, unfortunately even as a standard item, you are paying for it indirectly. But why trash up the roof and headliner when you can simply close the sunshade and be done with it?

Cheers!
Nick

Sunroof delete is to make the car lighter and structurally more sound I believe.

If I could, I would of gotten no sunroof. I hardly use it, even in California where it's a clear day 90% of the time, and would of liked the car a little bit lighter. Closing the sunroof would not solve that issue.

only way i would want it w/o the sunroof is if it had the CF roof like the M3

i only open the shade or open the sunroof if it is a low-light or no-light weather conditions outside...otherwise i keep the shade as well as the sunroof closed

A CF Roof skin would be pretty awesome. It would probably be around 100 lbs of weight saved just from the roof.

There is not a huge amount of difference between a metal hardtop and a CF roof top weight-wise.

The big gain comes from deleting the sunroof and changing out the sunroof roof skin (which has more layers for framing around the sunroof).
