Check Engine Light: "Do you have any aftermarket chips installed, sir?"
While the car was in for a new front right tire, they discovered the check engine light phenomena we had reported but they hadn't seen codes for. Service writer just called to ask if we had added any aftermarket ecu stuff before they went in to diagnose. We haven't, naturally, it's my wife's car and all it's likely to get at this stage is foul weather floormats. But I thought folks on this list might want the forewarning that the question seemed reflexive and part of a bmw service-writer script...

No doubt that BMW is well aware of these sites and what some people like to do with their cars. I also had a check engine light after 750kms. It cleared itself after 5 cycles.
