Almost 160 mph on way to Prague
Well, thought that I would let you all know about some driving I did today. My wife and I picked up our Montego Blue 135 on Thursday at the Welt. I put a few hundred miles on it ( drove to Neuschwanstein, then to Salzburg) and then on the way to Prague, still in Germany, while a S6 flew up behind me and gave me the flash, in an unrestricted speed zone, I nailed it.
I already knew the car was faster than I thought. I prescribe to the theory of the break in by means of high temp, pressure, and rpms. If you disagree, I respect that, but I don't want to hear it, thanks. Regardless of that issue, I was already going 100 mph at the time. I downshifted to fourth, and left the Audi behind. He hung in there, but I put some serious distance between us. I really didn't bother looking at the speedo often, but quick glances at it revealed that my trip to what I thought was the 155 mph limiter was going to be a quick one. The car has awesome pull. The exhaust sounds much better than I thought. I may not get that Borla exhaust, really, it sounds so good stock. But most of you know this already. I've done my share of track driving and driving fast. I have to tell you all, driving over 130 mph for any distance at all is a different animal altogether. As much as I like to think that I am a good driver, I have to give it to these German drivers who do this all the time, they have some balls. While putting some distance between me and the Audi, and as I kept my foot in it, I started to loose some of my determination. I was driving curves at high speed, some of which were somewhat blind. I was passing cars doing the regular 75 mph, like they were standing still. I was nervous to say the least. The car got a bit floaty at 145 to be honest. After a few more moments of this, I asked my wife to tell me how fast I was going, as it seemed I had bottomed out at the limiter. I expected her to say, 155, but instead, she said, 160. I looked down, thinking that the angle of her view was to blame for the discrepancy, but she was right, 159 mph. By the way, the Audi was still there, behind me, further back than before, still going, about the same speed as me. I did this speed for a bit, then slowly got to the right lane and wound it down, letting the Audi pass me. He gave me a wave as he drove by. I was clearly at the rev limiter, it was pulling hard one moment, then it went flat. This car is good for more mph, I don't know how much, I doubt much more given the difficultly getting past 150 for any performance car. So, there it is. I was able to do something that most of us will never be able to do in the states and not lose our license. I still have a trip to Vienna to go, then back to Munich. To be honest, I don't think I will peg it again. Or maybe I will..... Jose |

I know how you feel how it is to drive 130+ for a distance! I absolutely love the autobahn and I will seriously miss it! A7 north from Austria has some pretty good 3 lane straight-a-ways to it!

I was on a vacant streach of back highway a few weeks ago and decided to see what the 135 will do. I wound her up to near the top of 5th and reached 200kmph. I was amazed how fast it reaches these speeds when you get on it.

It's interesting to hear it pushes a little past the 155. I have had it at 140 for an extended period - and I totally agree it's so different to track driving to keep a car consistently at that speed, I had to be hyper-alert. But when I nudged toward 150 a sweeping bend approached and I held back (chickened out). I find a comfortable cruising speed (on an unrestricted road of course) to be about 120 in the 135i, above that I feel a bit nervy. Having said that, it's a great pleasure to cruise at UK motorway speeds of around 70mph, like a mini GT, and my GOD you notice the fuel consumption difference compared to 100+ !

On my ED the speedometer indicated 153 when we were at the limiter. I personally found 130 a great cruising speed, after the first couple of days, once I got comfortable, I would normally drive 130.
I agree about the floating at 145. There were a few times that I went above 130, nice straight stretches and little traffic, and a number of times that I would have to slowdown due to traffic or construction, but 130 felt just right. I really felt like we were driving 80 or 90. Even when we had to slow down fast there was no drama, nor was there any issue with getting back up to speed. Now I must admit that since I got my car back last week I have slightly exceeded the speed limit (on backroads) and while I have not gotten anywhere near 130, it feels a lot faster than it did on the Autobahn.

Same planet, different worlds...
It's a different world over there. I did ED with my friend for his 335xi coupe back in April. It's just a different setup.
1) Gas is much more expensive, roughly 2x the price and most of the difference is taxes. 2) The taxes pay for great mass transit and for impeccably maintained roads. 3) The mass transit makes it so that most people don't need cars so that there's generally less traffic than in the US. The quality of the roads makes it possible to drive 130mph for hours on end comfortably, except for sweat running down your sides... The quality of the highways in the US just doesn't cut it. You simply can't drive at those speeds on our crappy roads. We have deferred maintenance on our highways, bridges, tunnels, etc for the last 50 years and that's going to change someday or we'll be living in a 3rd-world country... ED of the 335 was a blast, but honestly, for the US I'd buy a 328 over a 335. I currently drive an X3 3.0i 6-spd manual and it's plenty fast for US roads. There is no place I can get this car over about 80 mph. |

Yep. 155MPH on the speedometer = 147MPH actual. I backed off thinking it was about to hit the limiter, and then looked at the max speed indication on my GPS. The limiter is set at 155MPH actual, so the needle would be around 160MPH when it kicks in. The car felt great to me at that speed, at least for something with stock suspesion. |

The speed limit in Austria is 130 kmh, which works out to about 80-81 mph. Please be careful in Austria, they tend to enforce it a lot more strictly than the Germans or the French.
But - peg the bitch.

Mods are watching this thread carefully. Although the OP's driving was legal (according to the OP), it would be illegal on most places outside Germany.
Consistent with 1addicts rules, we have already shut down a number of threads on kill stories, street racing and other activity that is generally considered dangerous. This thread is riding a very fine line.
