Took a drive up a twisty road yesterday

I am having a well drilled on one of my properties in the mountains and had to meet with the well driller yesterday. The drive is 100 miles of twisty road much of it along a river. I only have 500 miles on the car so I had to take it easy but what a good time. You know the yellow road signs with a speed in them are only recommended speed limits. You can do the speed limit and ignore the yellow speed limit signs and not get a ticket, at least in Idaho. I was able to do the speed limit (55mph) through all of the turns. Two guys in an Accord tried to keep up with me but they could not even begin to hang and dropped way behind. They ended up catching and passing me on the long straight where I go the speed limit +5. They got pulled over by the Sheriff. I gave them a beep of the horn as I went by. I passed a few trucks towing fifth wheels and wow! I was able to get around them with ease and not even exceeded the 4500 rpm for break in. After the well is done I am having some drainage work done to get rid of a standing water spring and will schedule an on site meeting during the week so I can drive the 135i up there again. It will be broke in by then. Oh and the sound of the exhaust when you are driving next to a wall in the canyon is amazing. You can really here the exhaust. I don’t think I have ever heard a stock BMW sound so good.
Got some decent pics of the car as well.

Sounds like a really fun drive. I hit a few roads like that on my drive back from Cali.....so much fun.

How hard was it to let the Accord pass you? You are the poster boy for restaint and self control.

I know it is wrong of me, but I can't help but crack a smile when someone blasts around me and later I see them pulled over.

Idaho is great driving country -- open vistas and low traffic. A very good place for a 135i (if you keep it under control!).
The exhaust music from the 135i is part and parcel of the enjoyment of the car for me. The first time I drove it I was in wonder at the excellent work the engineers had done in creating such a symphony from a stock car!

I drive that road almost every weekend in my truck and on the long stretches are where the cops hang out. They have trucks with the emergency lights inside the windshield so it is hard to tell it is a cop. Speed limit +5 for me and no tickets plus the radar detector just to let me know where they are or in the case of the 135i, when the detector goes off I do a speed check to make sure I am not going to fast. As Dan203 knows you can be way over the speed limit and not realize it.

you really do have self control! though i guess you have to if you want to avoid the tickets. in NJ radar detectors are illegal, so I'm usually stuck driving no more than 10 mph over except for the occasion I'm late somewhere or I'm feeling especially stupid, considering my speeding record's cleared in August after 2 years being a safe, boring driver . But August, coincidentally, is about the time my 135i should arrive from the motherland :headbang:

Come on, we bought these cars because they are fast. As long as one exercises some restrain and speed without being weckless, I think we can let that one slide. The OP wasn't egging on the Accord drivers. He was driving spiritedly and took note that Accords couldn't keep up.

Very nice drive I can imagine. Funny how the speeders got pulled over, HAHA. I always enjoy it when that happens. I guess the little grey monster can really handle great. The road in the picture looks so smooth, like new, very nice.

What I've found works great for finding neat roads is to do a map recon on Google Maps with the terrain setting clicked. Look for the twistiest country roads and go get 'em!

When did Jersey make radar detectors illegal?

Thought it was just D.C. and Virginia.

I think he meant that pumping your own gas is illegal in NJ.

Radar detectors are quite legal in NJ.. Before mine crapped out on me I used one all the time. Even got pulled over once when I got hit with POP radar and the detector didn't catch it in time... it was clearly displayed on the dash and the trooper actually commented that he guessed my detector didn't detect his POP so well...I got off with a warning after flashing a FOP card but he made no issue of the detector at all...

They're legal here in NJ? My parents told me they stopped using one (they ALWAYS used to, especially since they drive from here to Florida regularly) because they became illegal in our state.. I never questioned it so I never bothered looking it up. I guess they were misinformed. Well, this changes things entirely

Your folks may have meant Virginia where (along with DC) they are illegal. That's why I use battery powered detectors so they can be easily removed when I drive into DC & VA.
They are also illegal in many Canadian provinces.
