NEED help understanding ED, going to Germany
I will be going to Frankfurt in early July and will be there for about 10 hours layover. I am thinking this might be the perfect time to buy this car, but I need info on how it works. Questions:
- I will be flying to Israel for 1 month AFTER flying to Germany, is there any feasible way to have it shipped / delivered to my house after I buy it in Germany?? - I will only be there for 10 hours, is this enough time? - How much should I expect to pay +/- the options if I buy there AND how much to have it shipped back to my house? - Should I buy in July or wait for 09's? When will 09's come out and how much will they be compared to 08' ED? - Would I need to talk to a U.S. dealer and buy it now so it's ready when I go to Germany? Thanks! B |

First of all you need to read the ED wiki here:http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index...opean_Delivery
You are probably too late to order for early July, two months is about when you need to order your car for ED although sometimes you can do it sooner if everything works out right. You would need to talk to a dealer about doing an ED immediately. Delivery is straight to the dealership you ordered it from and takes 6-8 weeks after you drop it off in Munich. Second, 10 hours is enough but you have to go to Munich, not Frankfort. I don't know if 10 hours is enough time to get from Frankfort to Munich, pickup the car, drop it off and get back in time. Deliverycost is no different and you save 7% plus. In my case I saved $4500 by doing ED, but then my trip cost $7000. No need to wait for the 09s as I doubt there will be many changes other than more expensive. If you do want to do this and the timing works right you have to talk to a experienced ED dealer immediately.

You are not buying the car in Germany. You are ordering and purchasing it here in the US. The joy of doing ED is the driving part which your schedule does not permit. I would suggest doing it in the fall and enjoying the experience. Lots of info on this and the bimmerfest board.

I found the ED Wiki at bimmerfest.com to be helpful and it also offers an ED forum which allows you to drill down for detail on certain aspects of ED. In addition:
-- many but not all USA dealerships have a truly knowledgeable, experienced ED specialist; you need one of those on your side, right away -- BMW encourages a 3-month minimum advance order; thus, your ED rep is going to need to play an active role in making this work for you. -- ED cars like the one you want to buy are a big 'bonus' for a dealership, as they are 'extra' units not part of the dealer's annual allocation. In addition, they are sales units without flooring (interest) costs...so dealers are incented to sell ED units. Thus, a buyer can offer to buy at an 'invoice plus' price that, along with the $2000 price reduction which ED provides, can save you perhaps double that. This depends of course on how widely you shop. Perhaps you lose out on the 'driving experience' in Germany but I think your circumstances best suit an ED purchase from a financial perspective. You would experience zero travel costs associated with the purchase, get the maximum discount likely on a BMW, and you get Stateside delivery. And if you are attracted to a Performance Delivery, which is like whipped cream with a cherry on top, you can shop widely for the car as the pick-up will be in South Carolina independent of where the dealer is located. Hubba hubba... You need to dig into this pronto...but it sounds like an ideal option if you are interested in a new BMW. My hunch: you'll need to resked one of your two flights. Jack |

Yea, it seems if I want to do this the very least I need to do is possibly either changed my destination to munich (if I can) or change the layover timeframe...
I'm in Dallas, TX. Is there any dealership around I can talk to? Or do I just call a non-local dealer? Any recommendations? |

BMW of Dallas is where I placed my 135i order for European Delivery. But I started the process with them in February for my July 7th pickup. Can't hurt for you to give them a call, but don't be surprised if you get turned away. Their June allocations are most likely already spoken for, so they'd have to trade with another dealership to get you an allocation that could go into production within the next couple of weeks. Ask for Ez if you call BMW of Dallas - he seems to be the most knowledgeable around there with regard to the ED process.
The other DFW-area dealerships I contacted weren't even willing to discuss ED on a 1 series (I called Classic BMW and Moritz at several different times each in February/March). Again, can't hurt to try, but I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet. Best of luck either way!

The 7% savings is just for the difference between US and ED MSRP, if you can negotiate further you can save even more. I made my deal when I put money down in November prior to the announcement on there being no ED allocation for $1200 over invoice. So based on the ED invoice of $29,860; $1200 in dealer profit, destination and $8645 in invoice options my negotiated price was $40,480. MSRP on the car with options and destination was $45,175 so my actual savings were $4695.

The ED Forum on bimmerfest and the Roundel article on ED both state that an ED sale (to a USA customer by a USA dealer) is not part of that dealer's allocation...but rather an 'extra' unit and so beneficial to the dealer. What reference states that an ED sale is from within a given dealer's allocation?
