Be careful where you have your car tinted
About 3 weeks ago, so I wanted to start the mod process with something small, as Im sure alot us do. And I figured where else than to start with something simple, like window tint. Man, was I WRONG!!
I chose the Formula One Pinnacle for a variety of reasons. The closest shop to me was about 10 miles away. So I made the appt and went over there on a Sat. The process was going well, I sat in the bay and talked to the guy the whole time and he seemed pretty knowledgeable, having owned his own shop for years and doing okay for himself. He sold just before the economy went bad and wanted to be with his family more, working like a 9-5. He actually knew a buddy of mine who rode bikes, so it was decent conversation also. He got through all the windows pretty much flawlessly, or so I thought at the time. On the last window, passenger, he was applying the tint, when the unthinkable happend. Unthinkable to me anyway. Im watching him work and all of a sudden, SHATTER!!!! The window breaks. I calmly go over to my car and start taking pictures. To make this already long story short, as the shattered glass fell, it scratched the top of my leather door panel, the black trim on the outside, and the precious paint!!!! A couple of the scratches can be buffed out, one cannot. $3100 cost for all parts and labor. Door panel still isnt in and the window was just installed today. The main thing Im worried about, is the paint. They say the best thing to do is have a small part of the door sanded down and sprayed. THAT I AM VERY LEERY ABOUT. I will attempt to post pics but none are very good. Any good suggestions about the paint anyone?? |

if you have metallic paint, that entire panel will have to be repainted to look right. just keep that in mind. besides, it should be the shop's dollar, make them repaint it entirely. if they give you trouble, call your insurance and get them after the shop. that's what they're there for!

What exactly was he doing before it shattered? Applying tint? Drying with heat? Hit it with something when you looked away? It could have not shattered by magic.
As far as the paint. How bad is the scratch? I think re-painting the complete door would be best. How long have you had your car? |

Cool.
Re-paint the whole door?? F*%$!!! I am not liking the sound of that. Dealership, who "highly"recommends this bodyshop, says they are the only ones they've seen who can get the paint right, say they shouldnt paint the whole door. Actually, just the opposite |

Hey sorry to hear it, hope it doesn't ruin the new car experience for you. I know how frustrating that must be. Hang in there - I'm sure it'll all work out for you man.

Im goin down to see Sam @ AutoTalent on Fri. Gonna have him take me over to the shop they recommend for most if not all of their exotics. He said they are amazing. Charge alot, but who gives a fuck?? I would pay if it was my money. They will probably paint my Ericsson parts when it arrives |

Sorry to hear about the unfortunate experience mate... I am a tad shocked how the glass just gave way and shattered. Hmm, well I hope your baby gets fixed in no time and you are up and running.
Even if the shop owner met you half way on repair costs, thats pretty decent.
